Piracy is fast reaching the point where it affects nearly every single Internet user in some way or another. Often the attempts to curb the illegal downloading of copyrighted materials threaten to spill over and affect other aspects of our online lives, much like the recent debate regarding SOPA and PIPA.
For film-makers the impact is often negative, but with a change of perspective the Internet can suddenly be the catalyst for success, spring-boarding a film from obscurity to fame in record time. Best of all, film-makers are actually able to make money by sharing their creations for free.
Welcome to VODO.
Magic People, VODO People
VODO works in a similar way to crowd-funding services like Kickstarter, except the funding process almost works entirely in reverse. For film-makers VODO appeals because once the film has been made it can be shared and distributed (via BitTorrent, nonetheless) and promoted by VODO. There are no physical distribution or packaging costs and the retailer doesn’t take a slice of the pie either.
Instead the film is presented to the Internet for free. Once a user has downloaded and enjoyed the film then the option to donate is heavily encouraged. Like many crowd-funding ventures, there are opportunities to donate larger amounts in exchange for extras like signed DVDs, audio commentary and so on.
The service turns the idea of piracy on its head, and places faith in the downloading public to donate. Donation amounts can be as little or as much as you like, and the film-makers are guaranteed to see more greenbacks than if you spent a similar amount on a physical DVD. Without further ado, let’s see what quality films reside on this excellent service.
The product of a group of German 70s and 80s grindhouse enthusiasts, Snowblind is a film for anyone who enjoys graphic novel adaptations, cowboys and motorbikes. Talent was sourced from the US, Britain, Australia, Ireland and South Africa to make this a truly international effort.
The film is highly stylized in typical graphic novel fashion, and takes the usual grainy visuals and atmosphere and does something a bit different with it. Snowblind was entirely privately funded on virtually no budget. It won “Best International Picture” at Belfast’s 2010 Yellow Fever International Film Festival.
Shakey-cam films can either turn out tense, gripping and watchable (The Blair Witch Project) or cliched, boring and nausea-inducing (Cloverfield, anyone?). The Tunnel is yet another shakey-cam “found footage” film which, in my opinion, is worth the slog. Set in Sydney, Australia, a journalist and her team venture into a network of disused underground tunnels in search of a story only to discover that the story is coming for them.
The acting is a bit ropey in places, but the film does manage to pull some convincing characters and dialogue out of the hat when it matters. The Tunnel has won a variety of awards and is available in a selection of formats over at the official website.
Straight from the Eden Lake school of horror, Exhibit A tells the tale of a British family disintegrating under financial pressure through the eyes of the family video camera. That’s right, it’s technically another shakey-cam though this is certainly not your average horror film.
The camera eventually becomes “Exhibit A”, and captures the slow disintegration of a family unit that’s painful to watch, but impossible to look away. The film was shot in only 18 days and the actors did all of their own (convincing) camera work.
In 1972 British-national Brendan Grimshaw gave up his successful career editing major African newspapers in order to buy Moyenne Island for £10,000. Since then he and his friend Rene Lafortune have planted 16,000 trees, built 4.8KM of nature trails and built up a population of 109 giant land tortoises.
Experience Brendan’s paradise in this documentary which uncovers his last 30 years of effort. Brendan is now in his 80s and concerned about the future of Moyenne Island which has accrued a value of around £28 million (€34m).
Gonzo journalism lives on in the form of The Yes Men who stop at nothing to get their point heard and message conveyed. This special P2P edition of the film contains additional footage of the duo impersonating the United States Chamber of Commerce, who are now suing them for doing so. This footage cannot be released on DVD, so the only way it’ll be seen is if you download it.
Join the pair as they expose inequalities the world over including flagrant profiteering from Hurricane Katrina and other high-profile, highly-entertaining and very clever political stunts.
Conclusion
There are so many films to choose from on VODO, and you can easily donate using PayPal, Visa or Mastercard. Browse, download, give what you like and reap the benefits – not only are you helping out film-makers, but also proving that file sharing can be used for far more than just piracy.
Best bit? Most torrents are well-seeded so download speeds are generally very high.
Any films on this list you like? Any on VODO you’d like to recommend? What do you think of the payment model? Have your say in the comments!
Watch TV shows and movies from Hulu without leaving the comfort of your couch. If you’ve got an XBMC media center you’d be silly to not install this plugin (assuming you live in the US: Hulu is still blocked in all other countries).
A couple weeks ago I discovered that Boxee on the desktop is dead. I was disappointed, but was thrilled to discover that XBMC is not only a capable replacement but better than Boxee once you collect some amazing add-ons. What I didn’t get working right away was Hulu. So I used the Hulu desktop for that, despite its many faults. No longer. Thanks to a very quick and capable plugin from the Bluecop repository, I now have full access to Hulu from within XBMC. I can even turn off ads if I want, although I don’t think I will.
Using Hulu In XBMC
Load this plugin and you can start browsing immediately. Not sure where to start? Click “Popular“.
From here you can pick to browse popular shows, episodes or movies. Pull up popular shows and you’ll see a pretty great example of Hulu’s selection:
I know: this looks pixelated. It looks much better on a TV screen, if that matters.
Anyway, you can pick a show you want to watch and you’ll see the free episodes available, typically about six.
Are you a paying Hulu Plus user? Be sure to log in and get access to complete seasons for a staggering number of shows. You can do this in the settings, where you can also configure the advertising options:
That’s right, this plugin gives you total freedom to customize when and whether you see advertisements. Remember, if Hulu is to remain free it’s vital that people watch the ads, so use this feature wisely or you might end up ruining the fun for everyone.
Installing The Hulu Plugin
Do you want to check this plugin out? There’s only a few steps you need to follow.
First of all, on your XBMC computer, download the ZIP file of the Bluecop Repo.
Next, open up XBMC and head to the settings, then to the “Add-Ons” section. Pick the option to add a plugin via a ZIP file, then browse to the ZIP file you downloaded.
Finally, head to the “Add Add-Ons” section of the settings menu. You’ll find “Hulu” under “Video“. You may need to restart XBMC before it shows up, so don’t panic if you don’t see it. Install Hulu and enjoy your newfound television-related happiness.
Joyful outbursts of laughter, similar to those of a a child with a new video game console at Christmas, are an acceptable reaction but by no means mandatory. Enjoy the free TV shows.
Conclusion – Adding To Favorites
Want quick access to your favorite shows? You can add them to your XBMC favorites easily: just right-click or press “C” on any show and you can add the show to your XBMC favorites. This means you’ll have a quick shortcut to to your show, though where this shortcut lives depends on your XBMC theme.
So, is this plugin useful for you? As always I’d be happy to hear from you, and to hear of any other add-ons I need to check out. I learn a lot from you guys.
class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/stufftowatch_logo.png?323f2c" alt="" />A while ago we featured a couple of
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-classic-disney-animated-wartime-propaganda-cartoons-stuff-watch/">historically important Disney animations commissioned during the Second World War in the form of propaganda. Today we’re losing the cutesy animation and diving in with real footage of some of the most politically motivated films ever made.
Propaganda is a by-product of nearly every war or major conflict, and acts as a concentrated effort by the government to influence, calm and control. The Second World War saw propaganda make the jump from posters and radio broadcasts to the moving image, in film form. Let’s take a look at some of those films.
href="http://www.archive.org/details/wwf_prelude_to_war">Why We Fight: Prelude to War (1943)
Directed by Frank Capra and produced by the US Army’s own Special Services Division, Why We Fight: A Prelude to War tells the story (as of 1943) of the Second World War in 7 documentary-style films beginning with the 1931 invasion of China by Japanese forces.
As the name suggests, the film was designed to inform (and probably justify) to the American public the country’s involvement in WWII. The film was also a direct retaliation to Nazi propaganda film “Triumph of the Will” which also appears further down this list.
Slightly early to be considered a WWII film but way too important and highly-regarded to leave out, Battleship Potemkin (original Russian: Bronenosets Potyomkin) tells the story of the mutiny that occurred in 1905 when the crew of the Potemkin rose up and rebelled against their on-board Tsarist officers.
Considered to be one of the most influential propaganda films ever made, Battleship Potempkin was named the greatest film of all time at the Brussels World Fair in 1958 and is now available completely
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-places-to-get-free-legal-concert-recordings/">free of charge from the Internet Archive.
A French propaganda film produced towards the end of the Second World War, Bon Voyage tells the tale of a British RAF pilot who was shot down and managed to escape over French occupied territory. The film was produced in French, and the version below is accompanied with English subtitles.
The film was directed by one of cinema’s greats,
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-classic-alfred-hitchcock-movies-download-stream-free/">Alfred Hitchcock. Being a Hitchcock production (with some help from the British Ministry of Information) the director managed to stamp his unique approach on the film, making it a must for fans of his work.
href="http://www.nfb.ca/film/Churchills_Island">Churchill’s Island (1941)
Produced by the National Film Board of Canada (and currently hosted on their website), Churchill’s Island is a 1941 film chronicling the defense of the British Isles and the lengths taken to preserve the country’s freedom.
The film won the very first Academy Award for
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/geeky-documentaries-6-fascinating-films-hardware-software-space-stuff-watch/">Documentary Short Subject, earning the recently created Canadian film board their first Oscar. The film is regarded as historically important today thanks to the fantastic original footage that provides a moving, visual record of war on this highly fortified island.
href="http://www.archive.org/details/TriumphOfTheWillgermanTriumphDesWillens">Triumph of the Will (1935)
Regarded as one of the most important, well-produced and innovative films of all time, Triumph of the Will is a propaganda film straight out of Nazi Germany shortly before the country went to war. Commissioned and overseen by Adolf Hitler himself (look for his name in the opening credits), the film re-imagines Germany as a great power and sets Hitler as the great leader who will take the country to dizzying new heights.
Produced by female director Leni Riefenstahl, Triumph of the Will won awards in the US, Sweden and France amongst others and is still regarded by many as a highly influential film, even today.
A joint production between the US Office of War Information and Britain’s Ministry of Information, The True Glory documents the Allied victory on the western front from several different perspectives. The film makes use of fairly innovative
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/fps/">first-person camera angles and voice-over techniques to deliver several different perspectives on the struggle.
The film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 1945.
These films provide unprecedented visual reminders of a world at war, a dictatorship taking hold of its people, the effort to safeguard a homeland and even the relief felt around the world once the Second World War was declared over. If you know of any other films that have historical punch like these then don’t hesitate to share them in the comments.

href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/the-best-sites-for-movie-trailers/">movies make it into cinemas, but how many make it into the hall of fame?
Today’s Stuff to Watch takes a look at the action movie genre and features a few of the juiciest shootout scenes ever captured on film. Of course there’s no way I can include every quality shootout, so be sure to add your own in the comments underneath this article. Let’s lock and load!
Every time I think of this movie I can’t help but remember how gripped I was the first time I watched this scene. Of course the whole film is a quality production – but this particular scene sticks in your mind, has spawned countless references and even inspired a virtually identical mission in Rockstar Games’
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/gta-muo-selection-great-resources-grand-theft-auto-aficionado/">GTA4.
Without a doubt a “must-see” action film, Heat stars Al Pacino and Robert De Niro but doesn’t rely on high profile actors to sell the movie. Take a look at the clip below; it sells itself.
style="text-align: left;">Watch:
href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqT1lCqQyh0">Heat Downtown Shootout Scene @ YouTube (Embedding disabled on all uploaded videos of this scene, sorry!)
Hard Boiled (1992) [
href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104684/">IMDB]
It should come as no surprise that John Woo knows how to make a good action film, and with Chow Yun-Fat in a lead roll then you know the body count will be high. The plot’s as loose as it needs to be, but provides the perfect set-up: world’s toughest cop teams up with an undercover agent to take down mob boss and uh… people get shot.
Hard Boiled is often hailed as one of the grittiest, bloodiest and most violent films of its kind and this point is demonstrated excellently in the clip below. If this looks good then you’ll be delighted to hear that the film is full of sequences like this.
A Better Tomorrow (1986) [
href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092263/">IMDB]
Another John Woo film (and not the last either), A Better Tomorrow tells the tale of an ex-gangster trying to break ties with his gang whilst reconciling with his brother. The fact that his brother is in the police force means they’re both well trained in the ass-kicking department, and that’s all the set-up you need for an action flick.
The following scene is the kind of gory, all-guns-blazing bloodbath that made John Woo a “household” name.
A Better Tomorrow Part 2 (1987) [
href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094357/">IMDB]
Remember that tough cop and his ex-gangster brother? Well this time round they’re teaming up with a restaurant owner and (in true action movie style) they’re out for revenge. There’s the plot over with – can you guess what comes next?
Here’s one of those typical over-the-top sequences action films have become so well-known for, except this one’s tinged with John Woo’s brutality and
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-neat-movies-youtube-cool-visual-special-effects/">special effects department!
The Killer (1989) [
href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097202/">IMDB]
The Killer is a tale of remorse and double-crossings as a retired hitman undertakes one last job in order to care for his girlfriend and repay a debt he owes (not your usual debt, either).
My only criticism of this particular scene is that the bad guy with the incendiary shotgun ammo only fires one round. Now that’s not much of a criticism, but then again this is another John Woo and it’s hard to complain about ferocious gunplay.
The most recent film on the list, Boondock Saints is a tale of two brothers, the mafia and an FBI agent who begins to question right and wrong. The clip below is a thrilling and gory clash, but this isn’t your usual movie shoot-out.
Instead we’re treated to a slightly less orthodox firefight, recalled and narrated by Willem “and then there was a firefight!” Dafoe.
The Wild Bunch (1969) [
href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065214/">IMDB]
No list is complete without this tour-de-force, and no action fan is complete until they’ve watched this movie. Set at a time when the American “wild west” was disappearing, a group of outlaws are hot on the heels of one last big score.
This particular scene is actually the final shootout, so if you’ve not seen the film then you might want to skip it for now. If you have seen the film then I doubt you’ll be able to resist clicking play in the video below.
I’m very sorry I didn’t include your favourite shoot-out scene on this list (or maybe I did), but with so many to choose from it was tough to narrow it down to these few. Please leave your favourite scenes, films and recommendations in the comments below this article.In case you’ve missed Stuff to Watch recently, here are the last few entries:

This week’s article features a healthy mix of classic and obscure, featuring both
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-amazing-short-films-free-software/">short films and full movies for your enjoyment. Along with the usual helpings of sugar-coated Christmas tales there are a few alternative productions to shock and awe.
So whip out the Christmas booze, reach for the mince pies and feast your eyes on this lot.
Because no list of Christmas films is complete without an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novel, A Christmas Carol, here’s 3! This one in particular isn’t the oldest production, but the first “talkie” version of the story produced.
Each different version of Dickens’ classic tale tells the story in its own way, and this classic black and white version starring
href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0382957/">Seymour Hicks is no different. There’s less emphasis on Tiny Tim than we see in other versions, and the ghosts are interpreted somewhat differently too.
If you’re a massive fan of this heartwarming Christmas tale then you definitely won’t want to miss this version.
href="http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1ka1l_bugs-bunnychristmas-carol_fun">Bugs Bunny’s Christmas Carol (1979) [
href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0154263/">IMDB]
The second version of A Christmas Carol on this list comes from no other than Warner Bros and stars one of the most famous rabbits to ever grace television. Unlike Scrooge above, this isn’t a feature length film and comes in at a rather short 8 minutes due to the fact that it made up a small part of Bugs Bunny’s Looney Christmas Tales.
It’s definitely worth a watch, particularly if you have young children who have little experience with the
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/where-to-watch-old-classic-cartoon-tv-shows-online/">wonderful world of Warner Bros and their animated line-up. It’s also great to watch if (like me) you remember seeing this episode as a child and (like me) want to pretend you’re 9 again.
href="http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xp6uw">Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983) [
href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085936/">IMDB]
Last Christmas film, I promise! Up next
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-classic-disney-animated-wartime-propaganda-cartoons-stuff-watch/">it’s Disney and their take on Dickens’ tale – and who better to lead the pack than Mickey himself. The lead mouse predictably takes on the role of Bob Cratchit whilst Scrooge McDuck plays a fairly mean Ebenezer Scrooge.
Goofy, Jiminy Cricket and Willie the Giant each take on roles as the various ghosts that appear in the story, and there are plenty of other Disney favourites to spot too. This particular adaptation runs for 26 minutes and that places it well and truly in the “short film” category – enjoy!
The first of a very odd bunch of festive films, The Junky’s Christmas was originally a story written by William S. Burroughs around 1989 and was later adapted into a short but wonderful claymation film in 1993. This production is narrated by Burroughs himself, and even stars him briefly in the film’s live action intro.
What at first appears to be a dark and macabre take on the holiday season gradually lightens, eventually adhering to the “spirit of Christmas” ethos seen in so many yuletide motion pictures. The
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/15-coolest-stop-motion-videos-youtube/">stop motion, narration and fantastic ending make this a must-see (though I wouldn’t recommend it for the little ones).
href="http://www.archive.org/details/SantaClausversusTheDevil">Santa Claus (Conquers The Devil
href="http://www.archive.org/details/SantaClausversusTheDevil">) (1960) [
href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053241/">IMDB]
This rather crazy Christmas film has its origins in Mexico where it was produced and released in 1959 before being dubbed for American audiences a year later. The result? A near-psychotic rollercoaster ride of insanity that probably hasn’t aged too well.
Let me make one thing clear – this isn’t a particularly good film, but if you like bad films (especially bad Christmas films) then this live action screamer in which Santa must fight a demon sent to earth by none other than Satan will bring the house down.
This film was used by Mike Nelson and company for the TV series Mystery Science Theatre 3000, where it features a comedy narrative which might make the experience less painful.
href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkEumP828D4">Santa Claus Conquers The Martians (1964) [
href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058548/">IMDB]
My, hasn’t Santa been busy? First the devil, and now 4 years later – martians! This one isn’t Mexican, however, and bares very little resemblance to the film above (other than the fact that it too is considered to be a bad film).
The plot really isn’t worth going into, this film regularly makes it onto “worst movies ever” lists and is consistently in IMDB’s bottom-100 films for good reason. You’ll probably know already if you can stomach this nauseating mix of sci-fi and Christmas, but if you think you need some help this one was also tackled on Mystery Science Theatre 3000.
href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nR3Xwr1HGY">Bloody Mary Christmas (2010) [
href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1806817/">IMDB]
A particularly obscure short film, this Italian production takes Christmas Eve and turns it on its head in one of the most alternative festive productions ever made. The film is subtitled in English, and with a running time of around 24 minutes it’s fairly easy-going even if you hate reading subtitles.
Bloody Mary Christmas tells the tale of Alex, a boy sent to live with his ruthless aunt and uncle who he considers to have forgotten the real values in life. This year Alex asks Santa for a different kind of Christmas, and it appears his wish comes true at the stroke of midnight as an armed mysterious figure shows up uninvited.
This is one far-out festive short film, you have been warned!
Christmas films don’t always have to be mushy tales of holiday kindness, though as Santa Claus Conquers The Martians demonstrates – it’s not overly advisable to stray too far from the usual formula. If you have any favourite Christmas films then please share them with us in the comments below.

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/stufftowatch_logo.png" alt="film noir classics"/>Welcome one and all to a new regular feature here at MakeUseOf, crudely titled “Stuff to Watch”. Each week I’ll be delivering a visual-dose of moving images,
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-amazing-short-films-free-software/">internet-related film-making and little known gems that are available
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/the-3-best-sites-to-watch-your-favorite-classic-tv-movies-for-free/">free online for your perusal.
First up it’s the seedy, moody and highly stylized world of film noir, the catch-all term for the crime, drama and suspense ridden world of 1940s film-making. On this list you’ll find 6 black-and-white releases, each with their own heady doses of femme fatales, hardened crime fighters and deserted alleyways.
These films have been hand-picked from the Internet Archive, and are available for both streaming and downloading to watch as you please.
href="http://www.archive.org/details/TooLateForTears">Too Late For Tears [
href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0041968/">IMDB] (1949)
A lonely highway, a speeding car and the sudden acquisition of $60,000 is all it takes to push some people to the edge, as this 1949 classic starring
href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0779507/">Lizabeth Scott (as Jane Palmer) demonstrates. Jane’s husband is keen to turn the money over to the police, but she resists and before long a mysterious character shows up to claim the cash.
/>
class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/too_late_for_tears.jpg" alt="film noir classics" width="535" height="568" />
/> With a life of luxury in her sights, Jane proves her worth as a femme fatale. This film tackles the issue of money and its impact on relationships and personalities in typical film noir fashion. With Jane and her husband on opposite sides of the fence, tragedy is unavoidable in this tense and highly watchable piece of cinema.
Directed by
href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005789/">Rudolph Maté, who is considered by many a master of the film noir genre, D.O.A. features one of the most iconic intro sequences in the history of film. The opening shots introduce the main character – Frank Bigelow (played by
href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0639529/">Edmond O’Brien) – as he walks in to a police station to report his own murder.
/>
class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/doa.jpg" alt="noir classics" width="580" height="453" />
/> Unnervingly the police appear to already be expecting him, as he tells them that he has been poisoned and only has a short time to live. The rest of the movie is spent following Frank in his quest to find out who his killer is and why he is wanted on the slab. If you’ve never watched a film noir before, this one provides a gripping introduction to the genre from one of the finest film makers of the time.
href="http://www.archive.org/details/He_Walked_by_Night_1948">He Walked By Night [
href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0040427/">IMDB] (1948)
An example of an early film using experimental storytelling techniques, He Walked By Night is presented in a semi-documentary style and hit cinemas with the tagline “From the homicide files of the Los Angeles police”. In the dead of night a lone gunman shoots and kills an LAPD officer, prompting an epic manhunt in pursuit of the killer.
/>
class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/hewalkedbynight.jpg" alt="noir classics" width="400" height="300" />
/> The film itself is based on the
href="http://www.epinions.com/content_3817054340">real-life events of Erwin “Machine Gun” Walker, who evaded the death penalty by claiming insanity on death row. In true film noir style, He Walked By Night was the first feature-length production to use the Los Angeles underground sewer and storm drain systems as mood-defining backdrops. Gritty!
Starring the renowned
href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001682/">Mickey Rooney, Quicksand begins with an auto mechanic borrowing a paltry $20 from his employee’s cash register to woo a waitress with expensive tastes. This small and seemingly inconsequential act sets the ball rolling for what is a rollercoaster ride of events the mechanic could not have prepared for.
/>
class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/quicksand.jpg" alt="noir classics" width="462" height="386" />
/> As Rooney’s character attempts to put right his wrongdoings, his circumstances become worse and each attempt to get out of trouble backfires. A series of unfortunate events that leave the viewer feeling for the mechanic and gripped to their seats, Quicksand delivers a heady blow of film noir complete with grimy settings and a tense finale.
Detour delivers a steady dose of ever-increasing peril in a similar way as Quicksand (above). When hitchhiker Al Roberts decides to
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/travel/">travel from New York City to Los Angeles in pursuit of his singer girlfriend Sue, he accepts a lift from a man who suffers an accident and dies.
/>
class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/detour_1945.jpg" alt="noir classics" width="580" height="453" />
/> Fearing for his freedom, and how the police will react, Al takes on the identity of the dead man and continues his journey. Along the way he encounters a woman who is wise to his plan and uses Al’s unfortunate situation against him.
Walter Williams is a successful businessman who has recently purchased three factories in Denver. As he prepares to travel his wife claims to be feeling unwell and cannot travel with him to Colorado, instead opting to travel with her cousin – except the cousin turns out to be Walter’s wife’s lover, and instead the two plot to kill the businessman.
/>
class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/impact.jpg" alt="film noir classics" width="580" height="452" />
/> I’m not going to divulge any more as this is a film that’s full of twists and turns that simply has to be watched. What else can be said about a film with the tagline: “Wanted by two women! One for Love! One for Murder!”?
Conclusion
They just don’t make them like they used to do they? If you’ve enjoyed this small dose of classic film, don’t forget to check out

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/polls.jpg" alt="" title="STATIC POLLS" />Last week we asked you all to tell us
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/fast-type-makeuseof-poll/">how fast you type. Most readers claimed they could type (composing, not transcribing) at 60-69 WPM. Now, while there was largely a regular bell curve to explain all the other typing speeds, there were a surprising amount of people who can type at 150+ WPM. Let’s just say we’re impressed!
Out of 300 total votes, the statistics are as follows: 14% type at 60-69 WPM; 14% type at 70-79 WPM; 11% type at 30-39 WPM; 11% type at 40-49 WPM; 10% type at 50-59 WPM; 9% type at 80-89 WPM; 8% type at 20-29 WPM; 6% type at 150+ WPM; 6% type at 90-99 WPM; 4% type at below 20 WPM; 4% type at 100-109 WPM; while all ranges between 110-149 WPM received less than 2% votes each.
Full results and this week’s poll after the jump.
We’re very surprised to see so many MakeUseOf readers who can type at over 150 words per minute!
class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/How-Fast-Do-You-Type.png" alt="" title="How Fast Do You Type"/>
This week’s
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/polls/">poll question is: How Long Has It Been Since You Wore A Watch?
Geeks, teens and twenty-somethings mostly ditched their watches as soon as they got their first mobile phone. But these days even watch-lovers and old folk are finally leaving their watches at home. When did you stop wearing a watch? Or do you still wear one?
For the sake of the poll, include fob-watches and other single-purpose timekeeping devices as watches.
class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Mac.png" alt="keyloggers for mac"/>Before I get started writing this article, I’m just going to say that
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/apple/">Apple does a good job protecting its customers from
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/malware/">malware,
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/virus/">viruses, and various other mythical beasts on the internet. However, a lot of
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/spyware/">monitoring software still exists for Mac, and you should know about it, right?
I’m going to be honest with you in that I didn’t download any of these at all, and this was done for two reasons – they aren’t free, and I don’t trust them.
Just know that the first purpose of this article is to let you know that this enemy actually exists, and the second purpose is to help you know your enemy by name.
href="http://www.spectorsoft.com/products/Spector_Macintosh/index.asp">Spector Pro [Snow Leopard]
As a product of SpectorSoft,
href="http://www.spectorsoft.com/products/Spector_Macintosh/index.asp">Spector Pro markets itself as a way to check in on the kids or make sure that your employees are staying on task. It even prides itself with its ability to block websites and specific contacts on
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/instant-messaging/">instant messaging. However, we all know that this doesn’t mean people wouldn’t use it for malicious reasons. (As a note, the website also has some sketchy user testimonials anyway.)
Besides its basic run-of-the-mill keylogging methods, Spector Pro forwards all emails, transferred files, and screenshots to its primary operator (read: stalker). Also, like most keyloggers, the software will likely run in stealth mode if it is being used on you, so just keep that in mind. However, at the price of $99, the perpetrator would likely use it only if they had serious intentions.
href="http://www.sniperspy.com/">SniperSpy is one of three spy-related pieces of software produced by Retina-X Studios. Once again, we have the typical explanation of “Watch your children!” and “Watch your employees!”. However, in addition to its basic functions of screenshot capturing, location mapping (based on the current IP) and keylogging, SniperSpy allows its operator to view everything that you are doing totally live in a
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-spy-on-your-spouse-with-your-computer/">VNC-like fashion.
Basically, as you are typing out your romantic messages to your hypothetical forbidden lover, your spouse could be watching you as it happens. Another feature allows for operators to send the computer user an onscreen message – perhaps something classic like, “All your base are belong to us.”
href="http://www.aobo.cc/">Aobo claims that you can use the software to “spy and discover the truth” and “get back a stolen Mac”. This is perfectly fine and seemingly honest, but there is always the chance someone might have ulterior motives while using it. The website for this software is a little iffy, so just keep in mind its users could be equally so.
The software comes in two varieties – standard and pro – and both of them collect the standard information that any keylogger would. However, the professional version is noted for its ability to record passwords that are typed in-browser, and it claims to have been the first keylogger for Mac to do so. All logs (including screenshots, keystrokes, and websites) can be sent to the operator’s email or
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/8-free-ftp-clients-for-mac/">FTP.
Much like the other monitoring programs mentioned in this article,
href="http://www.amackeylogger.com/">Amac Keylogger requires the operator to install the software on the actual computer itself. Granted, this could always possibly be done remotely by a well-versed operator, but in the meantime, just reconsider who regularly plugs flash drives into your computer.
Amac Keylogger functions just as you would expect it would – it watches you do whatever you do, sending information of your activities to the mystery man behind another screen. Although it displays itself as employee monitoring software, it is easily exploitable. If you download it once, it monitors all user accounts on the Mac in question, and it always will open up in stealth mode on the user’s computer. Also, much like Aobo, the professional version of this software can record passwords.
Conclusion
Keep in mind that Apple does subtly protect its users from these Internet demons anyway, but if you want a basic method to combat keyloggers yourself, you should take a look at this MUO article –
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-ways-protect-keyloggers/">4 Ways To Protect Yourself Against Keyloggers. Besides this, remember to always update your OS to prevent unintentional installation, and don’t be surprised that some people do not. Take this example – a close friend of mine who works primarily with Macs once knew someone who hadn’t done so since the day that they bought it!
class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/hbo_go.png" alt="" />HBO is probably the hottest premium TV channel running right now. They have hit shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage, True Blood and Game of Thrones. They also run lots of hit movies and sports programming. When it comes to boxing, there is really nothing better than HBO.
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-5-coolest-free-iphone-apps-watch-shows-online/">Watching TV on the go is very popular, so why not merge the two?
Now, with HBO Go, subscribers can take all of their favorite HBO programming with them on the go for free. Currently, HBO Go is available on
class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hbo-go/id429775439?mt=8#">Apple iPhone,
class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hbo/id343753047?mt=8">iPad,
class="vt-p" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hbo-go/id429775439?mt=8#">iPod Touch and
class="vt-p" href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.HBO">Android smartphones. You can also watch all of the HBO programming from a
class="vt-p" href="http://www.hbogo.com/">computer, if you are looking to watch from a bigger screen. Of course, you have to be an HBO subscriber to take advantage of HBO Go’s programming, but it seems like at this point, most people who still have cable have HBO. For those that don’t, having the ability to watch content for free on the go might just put them over the edge.
Setting Up HBO Go
You can set up HBO from your mobile device, or from
class="vt-p" href="http://www.hbogo.com/#home/">HBOGo.com. Either way set up is a breeze. As long as you are an HBO subscriber, simply choose your cable provider and log in with the same email address and password you use with them. HBO Go will check to verify the information entered, and in a few short moments you will be up and running and ready to watch all the HBO programming you want, wherever you are.
If you do not have an online account with your provider, you will need to create one using your account number. This process will vary depending on your provider. I have Xfinity from Comcast, and for me it was as simple as entering my home phone, account number and choosing a username and password. Your results may vary depending on where you get your cable.
Features of HBO Go
As I mentioned before, HBO Go features all of HBO’s popular programming available on your smartphone or your computer. They also offer the shows immediately as they air on HBO. This way you do not have to wait; the content will be available when you want.
HBO Go also features parental controls. If you are familiar with some of the content on HBO, this is a must-have feature for anyone with children. I don’t think most parents would be too keen on their children watching a bunch of vampires doing dirty things with each other on True Blood. Since HBO is a premium channel they don’t have to limit their content like a regular channel, so having parental controls is necessary.
There are also custom watchlists which allow you to quickly save the shows you regularly watch. Simply search for a show, click on it and click the little “plus” icon to save it in your watch list.
The app also allows you to browse by genre. For example, if you want to see a list of all movies now available on the service, it is as easy as couple of clicks.
The video quality is very good, but depending on your data speed you may encounter some buffering. If you are connected to WiFi, or are in an area with strong 3G, you should not experience any problems.
Conclusion
For HBO subscribers this is a must use program. If you are someone who loves watching HBO, but just don’t have the time to sit around at home and watch TV, having the ability to take the content with you can be incredibly valuable.

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image24.png?54167" alt="android manager" />I love my smartphone. I think it’s an absolutely amazing device, and can’t wait to see where smartphone technology goes in three or five years. But there’s just one thing that scares me. What if someone steals it, or I lose it? My life is on that thing. It’s a treasure trove of personal information, with access to all of my contacts, Gmail correspondence, calendar, and even all the files on my Dropbox. Definitely not something I’d like to see fall into the wrong hands! If it ever does,
class="vt-p" href="https://cirrusmanager.appspot.com/#home">Cirrus Manager will be the first site I turn to.
Like just about every other “find my device” solution (
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/find-wipe-phone-remotely-android-lost/">Android Lost and friends), Cirrus Manager is an app-and-website combo. You install the app on your phone and configure it to talk to the website, and then use the website if the need ever arises. I have been testing Cirrus Manager for over a month before writing this post, so the app is already configured on my phone. When someone (hopefully me…) runs the app, the first thing they see is a password prompt:
As you can see, I chose not to manage contacts, messages, and processes via the Web interface. If anyone ever steals my phone, I would be able to tell who they’re calling. More importantly, Cirrus Manager constantly sends location updates to the server, and you can even turn the GPS on remotely for better accuracy.
I recently got to test the “Lock on SIM change” feature, accidentally. I switched carriers, and upon inserting my new SIM card and booting my phone, Cirrus presented me with a password prompt. I then entered my password (correctly), and it just shut off. No matter how many times I did this, this kept happening. The only way to get it to work was to insert the original SIM, access the app, disable “Lock on SIM change” and then change the SIM. CirrusLabs (the developer) say this should not happen, but that was the case when I tested it.
Still, it was a good example of how effective the locking mechanism can be. I found no way to circumvent the lock when it happened, and I consider myself a fairly skilled Android user. If your device is rooted, someone can always plug it into a PC and use adb shell to uninstall whatever is locking your device – but this is true for all such security solutions (so you can only hope your device doesn’t fall into skilled hands, or that you’re faster than the thief).
The last feature in the main menu, Auto Update Interval, is only available for paid plans (I subscribed to the $3/mo. plan). But even if your device doesn’t auto-update the site, you can always poll it manually. Which brings us to the site itself:
In a word: slick. The site runs on Google App Engine, and you get to use your normal Google account to log in. The gorgeous interface is dominated by a side menu that opens as soon as you hover over the strip of icons:
The menu is fairly self-explanatory. The two most important features, for me, are geolocating your device and remotely wiping it in case you cannot retrieve it. Let’s look at geolocation first:
Yup, this is where I am. You may be wondering why I live in a country that has no streets. This is not an issue specific to Cirrus Manager. The Google Maps API simply does not support all countries and territories, and I’m unlucky enough to be located in such an unsupported country. Clicking the pin icon reveals the latitude and longitude coordinates reported by the device, which you can then search for on Google Maps or any other mapping solution. If you’re in a supported location (North America, for example), you won’t have to go through that extra step.
Another interesting option is visualizing the location history over time. This shows the routes the device made over time as red lines over the map, and while it can be a bit creepy, it’s also very interesting to see how your device has been moving all over town.
Next, let’s look at the “nuclear option”. If someone steals your device and you become convinced you can’t have it back, you really should wipe it remotely. This is what the Wipe Device option looks like:
Note the option to wipe the SD card as well. This is a crucial option. If you just wipe your device without wiping the SD card, any would-be thief would still have access to lots of personal information, and possibly complete copies of all of your apps and data (if you use
class="vt-p" href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup&feature=search_result">Titanium Backup, which you really should). The SD wipe option is only available for paid plans, though (and is one of the key reasons I chose to pay for the service).
Bottom Line
Cirrus Manager has plenty of other features, including detailed hardware information for your device, SMS control (wipe your device using an SMS if it has no connectivity), and more. The free version is very good, but the paid version is even better. This is the security solution I chose for my own device – definitely recommended. Let us know in the comments which security app you use to protect your Android phone.

In just over 10 years now, no one uses VHS any longer, while

A prime example of this big switch is in the success of the

It has gained a lot of traction (and outrage) recently, which indicates a shift in how we watch movies and shows from physical discs to streaming lots of media. It’s just hard to depart from the convenience of online movie and TV show streaming. Nowadays, there are

class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-neat-movies-youtube-cool-visual-special-effects/">Finding freebies on YouTube Movies isn’t hard, but finding good and recent ones may take a bit of time.
Here’s a list of 6 free Hollywood full length movies which have received generally favorable reviews and are fairly recent (oldest movie from this list was released in 1992, while the newest movie is from 2006). If you have some free time this summer, read on for some free, enjoyable goodies!

Starring Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith, Men in Black is a 1997 science fiction comedy movie, based on the comic book series of the same name. It was a critically and commercially successful, gaining a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, an Academy Award for Best Makeup with nominations in other categories, and grossing nearly 5 times what it cost to make the movie. It has spanned two sequels, the last of which will be released next year.
class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/movie?v=uR4Jpd_mSa4&feature=mv_sr">Gridiron Gang
This 2006 film follows the story of a former American football player, portrayed by Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, who helps the teenagers at the juvenile detention center where he supervises to gain self-esteem by engaging in sports, particularly, football. This movie is actually loosely based on the true story of the Kilpatrick Mustangs, a football team consisted of juvenile detainees at Camp Kilpatrick in California.
This 1992 adaptation of the novel stars Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves and Anthony Hopkins. Oldman plays Count Dracula, who encounters a living image of his deceased wife in Winona Ryder’s character. The movie has gotten an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 3 Academy Awards for Best Makeup, Best Sound Effects Editing and Best Costume Design. It was also a box office hit.
In this 2000 film, Mel Gibson gives life to a war veteran who has renounced violence but still has to participate in the American Revolutionary War against the British, while his elder son, played by Heath Ledger, gladly joins the Continental Army. The movie received generally positive reviews and was nominated for 3 Academy Awards, including Best Sound, Best Cinematography and Best Original Music Score.
class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/movie?v=Wz2WPBfE_Os&feature=mv_sr">Bad Boys
src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/2011-07-10_042930.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="watch full length movies" width="580" height="657" />
Will Smith and Martin Lawrence star in this hilarious 1995 action film about two Mami cops that need to protect a murder witness and investigate a case of stolen drugs. The flick, which was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, became a box office hit, earning $140 million worldwide against a $10 million budget.
This is technically not on Youtube Movies yet (as of 7/10/11), but considering it’s being shown on Crackle.com (which legally provides a lot of the full-length movies on this list on Youtube Movies), I’d say it’s bound to appear on Youtube soon.

Jerry Maguire is a romantic comedy-drama film from 1996 where Tom Cruise plays a successful sports agent who tries to rebuild his once-honorable career when he’s dismissed from his job, with the support of wide receiver Rod Tidwell, portrayed by Cuba Gooding Jr. in an Oscar-winning performance, who happens to be Maguire’s most disgruntled client, and Renee Zellweger’s character, who is the only person from Maguire’s former job that believes in him.

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/tv-chrome.jpg?54167" alt="tv chrome channels" />I used to be a huge
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/tv">TV addict. Now because of the lack of time, I may only use it as background. But I am still watching it from time to time to relax and switch off from work. Therefore I was quite happy to discover this (quite old but not yet covered) tool.
class="vt-p" href="http://www.tv-chrome.com/">TV Chrome is a Google Chrome extension (it does have a Firefox version but it doesn’t seem to be compatible with Firefox 5.0) that tunes into live television feeds from across the world and lets you watch various international TV channels online.
I have found it great for various purposes:
You can keep track of hot news or sports while at work with no TV;
You can use watching TV as background noise (especially when you need to do some monotonous work and music makes you either too sleepy or two energetic);
You can use it to relax and switch off from a hard task you have just completed;
You can use it if you are learning a foreign language and need the constant stream of a foreign language speech in the background;
You can use it like a regular TV no matter what you are using it for in your daily life.
Have it Installed
The tool is installed as a regular Google Chrome extension: just click the “Get TV-Chrome” link, install the app and use it right away.
You may need to install the Windows Media Player browser plugin and
class="vt-p" href="http://www.google.com/support/chrome/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=95697">here are excellent instructions on doing it from Google Chrome:
Download and install the plugin from
class="vt-p" href="http://port25.technet.com/pages/windows-media-player-firefox-plugin-download.aspx">here;
Click Run to start the Setup Wizard. Follow the instructions in the wizard to finish installing the plugin.
Re-start Google Chrome and enjoy the TV Chrome experience!
Give It A Test Drive
The TV Chrome extension worked pretty smoothly with me. Immediately after installing it, you can find it in your toolbar. Click the icon to get a list of all available channels broken into categories by country and type (news, sports, entertainment, music, movies, etc):
There are plenty of countries represented, though not every station is always online, obviously. Click any category link to have it expanded into the collecting of actual TV channels inside. Click any station to start the video in a media-player-like pop-up. You will need to give it a few seconds to tune in and buffer the video.
The quality of the video may vary but most of the channels you’ll come across will be at least decent quality.
You can double-click on the player to view the video full screen.
Drawbacks?
Nothing is perfect and this app does have a few inconveniences as well:
You are likely to find some channels deny access, fail to respond or have moved (there’s an easy tool to report a broken channel, so let’s hope the database is cleaned up often);
There are quite a few ads inside the player, but come on! The app is absolutely free! Besides, you can resize the player window to cover up any distractions.
What are your thoughts? Do you feel inclined to give the tool a try? Please share your opinions in the comments!

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/budgeticon1.png" alt="" />Any personal finance adviser will tell you that developing and maintaining a financial budget is the best way to meet monthly expenses, save for financial emergencies and plan for the future. Keeping a budget basically means totaling your income for the month and subtracting the total of all your expenses. A budget calculator allows you to itemize your expenses so you can see where all your spending is going, especially for non-fixed discretionary items like groceries, music downloads, fast food, entertainment, computer software and the like that may be keeping you from paying off your credit debts or building a sufficient savings account.
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/save-money-and-track-your-finances-with-mint/">Mint is one of the best free online budgeting systems, but if you don’t think you need something that elaborate, there are several other free sites for doing month-to-month budget calculations.
This aptly named budget calculator is straightforward and includes expense boxes for many of the most typical types of fixed and non-fixed expenses—rent or mortgage, electricity, water, phone, Internet, etc. You need to input of course what applies to your personal finances. It also contains boxes for monthly savings, IRA, and investments.
After you enter the amounts and press “Calculate Budget” you can view and print out your budget for the month. As the site points out, “If the amount you get is a negative number check your expenses and savings to find out what is causing you to spend more than you make, and if you have money left over, put more money into savings or put it towards ‘Fun and Entertainment‘”.
This calculator is not as extensive as the one above, but if your expenses are limited to the basics – rent or mortgage, one or two credit cards, car loan, entertainment, etc – then this calculator is useful for quick results.
If going to college is in your plans, the banking website,
class="vt-p" href="http://www.chase.com">Chase.com, has a free student loan and budget calculator that computes your assets. This includes job income, scholarships, grants, parents/other, and your expenses – tuition, books and fees, room board, etc.
Free Financial Advice also has a basic budget calculator, but it also features lots of short article advice for personal finance management and savings, including investing for beginners, ideas for earning extra money, saving gas, clothing, computer software, landscaping, paying off debts, etc.
DebtSteps has three extensive budget and loan calculators – Free Household Budget Form, Mortgage Payment Calculator, and a Credit Card Payoff Calculator.
When you click on the household budget form, select the Print View option at the bottom of the page, and you will get a very extensive list for income and assets boxes, and numerous one for expenses – including unsecured debts, and gifts and donations.
Home Budget Calculator does what the above calculators do, but it includes two other unique features. It provides data boxes for you and your spouse’s income as well as more specific data, such as your tax withholdings, FICA, and retirement deductions or expenses.
Frugalpig is a site dedicated to providing readers with tips and strategies for frugal living. It includes its own budget calculator for finding what the site calls “budget leaks”. If you need or want an old fashion pen and paper method for budgeting, you can also download the site’s free
class="vt-p" href="http://www.frugalpig.com/frugallife/frugal-finance/budgets/family-budget-worksheet-online/">PDF family budget worksheet.
When you get into the habit of creating and maintaining a budget, you will typically start looking for how you can tighten your budget to either meet monthly expenses, pay off a huge debt, or create emergency savings.
Bankrate has a budget calculator as well, but it also includes several other financial calculators for mortgages, auto loans, credit card transfers, and home equity calculations.

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/feature-youtube-3d.jpg" alt="youtube 3d content"/>Love it or hate it, 3D is here to stay. It’s a natural progression of visual displays, and I’m kind of bored of hearing it’s a fad. So let’s take this opportunity to look at something which is in fact, quite clearly a fad – yes, YouTube in 3D. Grab those red/blue specs, switch your TV to 3D mode, charge your active shutter glasses, or just go all crossed eyed while I introduce you to the world in 3D, via YouTube.
One the main arguments against 3D is that there simply isn’t enough content. In fact, half of the movies I’ve watched in the last 6 months have been in glorious 3D 1080p HD, so I’d hazard a guess that you’re just not looking the right places. There’s even a dedicated
href="http://www.3dtorrents.org/index.php?page=torrents">3D torrent site now (registrations are currently open, by the way). And then we have YouTube – the ultimate media liberator of the people, a place where idiots can be become famous and nothing is kept secret – and right now the best place to find amateur 3D content.
The Technical Stuff:
Head over to YouTube dedicated
href="http://www.youtube.com/select_3d_mode">3D viewing options page to choose first how you’d like to view 3D content. There’s actually quite a few options available.
class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/viewing-methods.jpg" alt="youtube 3d content" width="580" height="483"/>
Various colored filters for that old-school comic book 3D: This is pretty much the worst kind of 3D you can get and results in horrendous discoloration, but it’s good of them to allow all the combinations and not just traditional red/blue. You also buy an
href="http://www.googlestore.com/You+Tube/Accessories/YouTube+3D+Paper+Glasses+-+Pack+of+10.axd">official set of YouTube 3D glasses if you like.
Interleaved, for some 3DTVs and Zalman passive filter viewing methods.
Side-by-Side, for Samsung TVs and people who like to go cross-eyed.
Any 3D video you view will have a little 3D menu in the bottom right where you can quickly access the 3D viewing method page, as well as switch the left/right if it’s reversed, and change the video to full/half width (if you regularly view 3DSBS BlueRay movies, those are run at half-width)
/>
class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/3d-menu-button.png" alt="youtube 3d videos" width="212" height="204" />
How to Find 3D videos:
There’s three main ways to find 3D content on YouTube. Firstly, when the service was original launched, a special tag of “yt3D:enable=true” had to be applied to get the 3D button and functionality to appear. That’s not true anymore, but
href="http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=yt3d%3Aenable%3Dtrue&aq=f">there’s an archive of stuff in there and some people are still tagging their videos like that, so it’s worth a look.
class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/yt3d_true.jpg" alt="youtube 3d videos" width="580" height="457"/>
Secondly, YouTube has
href="http://www.youtube.com/user/3D">official 3D channel to highlight some of the better videos.
Thirdly, there’s a number of professional and affiliated channels producing fantastic 3D content, so here’s some of the best ones:
href="http://www.youtube.com/user/ExploreMediaGroup">ExploreMediaGroup: a good collection of quality content from various sources, mostly trailers and travel videos.
href="http://www.youtube.com/user/S3DGamerZone">S3D Gamer Zone: My personal favourite, I could watch these game videos and walkthroughs all day. The great thing about game content in 3D is that it’s generally done well and high-res, with none of the bad camera movement and poor video quality that accompanies user-shot content.
href="http://www.youtube.com/user/iwatch3d">iWatch3D: Just a regular guy based in London and into 3D, he films various events and locations.
Of course, just like the regular YouTube 2D the majority of 3D content is so bad I wouldn’t want to waste even a single minute of my life watching it – and those ads at the bottom of the video window are even *more* obnoxious when you’re trying to go cross-eyed. Okay, so maybe you’re not going to find anything to write home about – but it’s innovative, and I like that.
