Keep A Close Watch On Your Android Device With Cirrus Manager [2.2+]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image24.png?54167" alt="android manager" />I love my smartphone. I think it’s an absolutely amazing device, and can’t wait to see where smartphone technology goes in three or five years. But there’s just one thing that scares me. What if someone steals it, or I lose it? My life is on that thing. It’s a treasure trove of personal information, with access to all of my contacts, Gmail correspondence, calendar, and even all the files on my Dropbox. Definitely not something I’d like to see fall into the wrong hands! If it ever does, class="vt-p" href="https://cirrusmanager.appspot.com/#home">Cirrus Manager will be the first site I turn to.

Like just about every other “find my device” solution ( class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/find-wipe-phone-remotely-android-lost/">Android Lost and friends), Cirrus Manager is an app-and-website combo. You install the app on your phone and configure it to talk to the website, and then use the website if the need ever arises. I have been testing Cirrus Manager for over a month before writing this post, so the app is already configured on my phone. When someone (hopefully me…) runs the app, the first thing they see is a password prompt:

class="aligncenter" style="border:1px solid black" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image25.png?54167" border="0" alt="android manager" width="300" height="500" />

Once you enter the correct password, you get to the main menu:

class="aligncenter" style="border:1px solid black" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image26.png?54167" border="0" alt="manage your android phone" width="300" height="500" />

This is not an “all or nothing” proposition. You can select how much control you wish to grant Cirrus Manager over your phone.

class="aligncenter" style="border:1px solid black" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image27.png?54167" border="0" alt="manage your android phone" width="300" height="500" />

As you can see, I chose not to manage contacts, messages, and processes via the Web interface. If anyone ever steals my phone, I would be able to tell who they’re calling. More importantly, Cirrus Manager constantly sends location updates to the server, and you can even turn the GPS on remotely for better accuracy.

The security settings are quite comprehensive:

class="aligncenter" style="border:1px solid black" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image28.png?54167" border="0" alt="manage your android phone" width="300" height="500" />

I recently got to test the “Lock on SIM change” feature, accidentally. I switched carriers, and upon inserting my new SIM card and booting my phone, Cirrus presented me with a password prompt. I then entered my password (correctly), and it just shut off. No matter how many times I did this, this kept happening. The only way to get it to work was to insert the original SIM, access the app, disable “Lock on SIM change” and then change the SIM. CirrusLabs (the developer) say this should not happen, but that was the case when I tested it.

Still, it was a good example of how effective the locking mechanism can be. I found no way to circumvent the lock when it happened, and I consider myself a fairly skilled Android user. If your device is rooted, someone can always plug it into a PC and use adb shell to uninstall whatever is locking your device – but this is true for all such security solutions (so you can only hope your device doesn’t fall into skilled hands, or that you’re faster than the thief).

The last feature in the main menu, Auto Update Interval, is only available for paid plans (I subscribed to the $3/mo. plan). But even if your device doesn’t auto-update the site, you can always poll it manually. Which brings us to the site itself:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image29.png?54167" border="0" alt="android phone manager" width="580" height="431" />

In a word: slick. The site runs on Google App Engine, and you get to use your normal Google account to log in. The gorgeous interface is dominated by a side menu that opens as soon as you hover over the strip of icons:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image30.png?54167" border="0" alt="android phone manager" width="330" height="500" />

The menu is fairly self-explanatory. The two most important features, for me, are geolocating your device and remotely wiping it in case you cannot retrieve it. Let’s look at geolocation first:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image31.png?54167" border="0" alt="android phone manager" width="580" height="497" />

Yup, this is where I am. You may be wondering why I live in a country that has no streets. This is not an issue specific to Cirrus Manager. The Google Maps API simply does not support all countries and territories, and I’m unlucky enough to be located in such an unsupported country. Clicking the pin icon reveals the latitude and longitude coordinates reported by the device, which you can then search for on Google Maps or any other mapping solution. If you’re in a supported location (North America, for example), you won’t have to go through that extra step.

Another interesting option is visualizing the location history over time. This shows the routes the device made over time as red lines over the map, and while it can be a bit creepy, it’s also very interesting to see how your device has been moving all over town.

Next, let’s look at the “nuclear option”. If someone steals your device and you become convinced you can’t have it back, you really should wipe it remotely. This is what the Wipe Device option looks like:

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image32.png?54167" border="0" alt="android manager" width="580" height="350" />

Note the option to wipe the SD card as well. This is a crucial option. If you just wipe your device without wiping the SD card, any would-be thief would still have access to lots of personal information, and possibly complete copies of all of your apps and data (if you use class="vt-p" href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup&feature=search_result">Titanium Backup, which you really should). The SD wipe option is only available for paid plans, though (and is one of the key reasons I chose to pay for the service).

Bottom Line

Cirrus Manager has plenty of other features, including detailed hardware information for your device, SMS control (wipe your device using an SMS if it has no connectivity), and more. The free version is very good, but the paid version is even better. This is the security solution I chose for my own device – definitely recommended.  Let us know in the comments which security app you use to protect your Android phone.

    6 Free Full-Length Hollywood Films You Can Watch On YouTube Movies [US Only]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/2011-07-10_004056.jpg?54167" alt="free full length movies" />I remember, just over a decade ago, I’d record all of the Backstreet Boys and ‘N SYNC’s MTV VMA performances on tape and watch them over and over. In just over 10 years now, no one uses VHS any longer, while class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/convert-video-files-to-dvd-mp4-vcd-mpeg-windows/">VCDs have pretty much gone and class="vt-p" href="http://techland.time.com/2011/05/04/dvd-sales-plunge-in-u-s-digital-sales-on-the-rise/">DVD sales have slowed down compared to digital rentals.

    A prime example of this big switch is in the success of the class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/two-very-useful-web-apps-to-get-the-most-out-of-netflix/">streaming/DVD rental class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/two-very-useful-web-apps-to-get-the-most-out-of-netflix/">giant class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/9-tips-tricks-netflix-subscription/">Netflix. It has gained a lot of traction (and outrage) recently, which indicates a shift in how we watch movies and shows from physical discs to streaming lots of media. It’s just hard to depart from the convenience of online movie and TV show streaming. Nowadays, there are class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/watch-movies-on-internet-youtube/">plenty of free, full length movies you can rent or you can catch on class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/movies">YouTube Movies, such as class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/movie/little-fockers">Little Fockers, class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/movie/the-kings-speech">The King’s Speech, etc. class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-neat-movies-youtube-cool-visual-special-effects/">Finding freebies on YouTube Movies isn’t hard, but finding good and recent ones may take a bit of time.

    Here’s a list of 6 free Hollywood full length movies which have received generally favorable reviews and are fairly recent (oldest movie from this list was released in 1992, while the newest movie is from 2006). If you have some free time this summer, read on for some free, enjoyable goodies!

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/movie?v=x5g0J6keqig&feature=mv_sr">Men In Black

    src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/2011-07-10_020353.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="free full length movies" width="580" height="658" />

    Starring Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith, Men in Black is a 1997 science fiction comedy movie, based on the comic book series of the same name. It was a critically and commercially successful, gaining a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, an Academy Award for Best Makeup with nominations in other categories, and grossing nearly 5 times what it cost to make the movie. It has spanned two sequels, the last of which will be released next year.

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/movie?v=uR4Jpd_mSa4&feature=mv_sr">Gridiron Gang

    src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/2011-07-10_013436.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="full length movies" width="580" height="658" />

    This 2006 film follows the story of a former American football player, portrayed by Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, who helps the teenagers at the juvenile detention center where he supervises to gain self-esteem by engaging in sports, particularly, football. This movie is actually loosely based on the true story of the Kilpatrick Mustangs, a football team consisted of juvenile detainees at Camp Kilpatrick in California.

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/movie?v=VfWFcT2waKE&feature=mv_sr">Dracula

    src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/2011-07-10_005532.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="full length movies" width="580" height="651" />

    This 1992 adaptation of the novel stars Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves and Anthony Hopkins. Oldman plays Count Dracula, who encounters a living image of his deceased wife in Winona Ryder’s character. The movie has gotten an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 3 Academy Awards for Best Makeup, Best Sound Effects Editing and Best Costume Design. It was also a box office hit.

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/movie?v=gx3z-8mbqxQ&feature=mv_sr">The Patriot

    src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/2011-07-10_032944.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="full length movies" width="580" height="657" />

    In this 2000 film, Mel Gibson gives life to a war veteran who has renounced violence but still has to participate in the American Revolutionary War against the British, while his elder son, played by Heath Ledger, gladly joins the Continental Army. The movie received generally positive reviews and was nominated for 3 Academy Awards, including Best Sound, Best Cinematography and Best Original Music Score.

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/movie?v=Wz2WPBfE_Os&feature=mv_sr">Bad Boys

    src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/2011-07-10_042930.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="watch full length movies" width="580" height="657" />

    Will Smith and Martin Lawrence star in this hilarious 1995 action film about two Mami cops that need to protect a murder witness and investigate a case of stolen drugs. The flick, which was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, became a box office hit, earning $140 million worldwide against a $10 million budget.

    Bonus: class="vt-p" href="http://www.crackle.com/c/Jerry_Maguire">Jerry Maguire

    This is technically not on Youtube Movies yet (as of 7/10/11), but considering it’s being shown on Crackle.com (which legally provides a lot of the full-length movies on this list on Youtube Movies), I’d say it’s bound to appear on Youtube soon.

    src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/2011-07-10_050744.jpg?54167" border="0" alt="free full length movies" width="576" height="498" />

    Jerry Maguire is a romantic comedy-drama film from 1996 where Tom Cruise plays a successful sports agent who tries to rebuild his once-honorable career when he’s dismissed from his job, with the support of wide receiver Rod Tidwell, portrayed by Cuba Gooding Jr. in an Oscar-winning performance, who happens to be Maguire’s most disgruntled client, and Renee Zellweger’s character, who is the only person from Maguire’s former job that believes in him.

    Watch Dozens of TV Channels On Your Chrome Browser With TV Chrome

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/tv-chrome.jpg?54167" alt="tv chrome channels" />I used to be a huge class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/tv">TV addict. Now because of the lack of time, I may only use it as background. But I am still watching it from time to time to relax and switch off from work. Therefore I was quite happy to discover this (quite old but not yet covered) tool.

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.tv-chrome.com/">TV Chrome is a Google Chrome extension (it does have a Firefox version but it doesn’t seem to be compatible with Firefox 5.0) that tunes into live television feeds from across the world and lets you watch various international TV channels online.

    I have found it great for various purposes:

    • You can keep track of hot news or sports while at work with no TV;
    • You can use watching TV as background noise (especially when you need to do some monotonous work and music makes you either too sleepy or two energetic);
    • You can use it to relax and switch off from a hard task you have just completed;
    • You can use it if you are learning a foreign language and need the constant stream of a foreign language speech in the background;
    • You can use it like a regular TV no matter what you are using it for in your daily life.

    Have it Installed

    The tool is installed as a regular Google Chrome extension: just click the “Get TV-Chrome” link, install the app and use it right away.

    You may need to install the Windows Media Player browser plugin and class="vt-p" href="http://www.google.com/support/chrome/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=95697">here are excellent instructions on doing it from Google Chrome:

    • Download and install the plugin from class="vt-p" href="http://port25.technet.com/pages/windows-media-player-firefox-plugin-download.aspx">here;
    • Click Run to start the Setup Wizard. Follow the instructions in the wizard to finish installing the plugin.
    • Re-start Google Chrome and enjoy the TV Chrome experience!

    Give It A Test Drive

    The TV Chrome extension worked pretty smoothly with me. Immediately after installing it, you can find it in your toolbar. Click the icon to get a list of all available channels broken into categories by country and type (news, sports, entertainment, music, movies, etc):

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/tv-chrome-01.jpg?54167" alt="tv chrome channels" width="500" height="613" />

    There are plenty of countries represented, though not every station is always online, obviously. Click any category link to have it expanded into the collecting of actual TV channels inside. Click any station to start the video in a media-player-like pop-up. You will need to give it a few seconds to tune in and buffer the video.

    The quality of the video may vary but most of the channels you’ll come across will be at least decent quality.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/tv-chrome-02.jpg?54167" alt="tv chrome channels" width="412" height="419" />

    You can double-click on the player to view the video full screen.

    Drawbacks?

    Nothing is perfect and this app does have a few inconveniences as well:

    • You are likely to find some channels deny access, fail to respond or have moved (there’s an easy tool to report a broken channel, so let’s hope the database is cleaned up often);
    • There are quite a few ads inside the player, but come on! The app is absolutely free! Besides, you can resize the player window to cover up any distractions.

    What are your thoughts? Do you feel inclined to give the tool a try? Please share your opinions in the comments!

    Watch Your Spending & Control Your Budget With These 8 Free Budget Calculators

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/budgeticon1.png" alt="" />Any personal finance adviser will tell you that developing and maintaining a financial budget is the best way to meet monthly expenses, save for financial emergencies and plan for the future. Keeping a budget basically means totaling  your income for the month and subtracting the total of all your expenses. A budget calculator allows you to itemize your expenses so you can see where all your spending is going, especially for non-fixed discretionary items like groceries, music downloads, fast food, entertainment, computer software and the like that may be keeping you from paying off your credit debts or building a sufficient savings account.

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/save-money-and-track-your-finances-with-mint/">Mint is one of the best free online budgeting systems, but if you don’t think you need something that elaborate, there are several other free sites for doing month-to-month budget calculations.

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.thebudgetcalculator.com/budgetcalc/index.html">The Budget Calculator

    This aptly named budget calculator is straightforward and includes expense boxes for many of the most typical types of fixed and non-fixed expenses—rent or mortgage, electricity, water, phone, Internet, etc. You need to input of course what applies to your personal finances.  It also contains boxes for monthly savings, IRA, and investments.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/screenshot701.png" border="0" alt="Screenshot701" width="444" height="371" />

    After you enter the amounts and press “Calculate Budget” you can view and print out your budget for the month. As the site points out, “If the amount you get is a negative number check your expenses and savings to find out what is causing you to spend more than you make, and if you have money left over, put more money into savings or put it towards ‘Fun and Entertainment‘”.

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.calculatorweb.com/calculators/budgetcalc/">Budget Calculator

    How To Find And Watch YouTube 3D content

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/feature-youtube-3d.jpg" alt="youtube 3d content"/>Love it or hate it, 3D is here to stay. It’s a natural progression of visual displays, and I’m kind of bored of hearing it’s a fad. So let’s take this opportunity to look at something which is in fact, quite clearly a fad – yes, YouTube in 3D. Grab those red/blue specs, switch your TV to 3D mode, charge your active shutter glasses, or just go all crossed eyed while I introduce you to the world in 3D, via YouTube.

    One the main arguments against 3D is that there simply isn’t enough content. In fact, half of the movies I’ve watched in the last 6 months have been in glorious 3D 1080p HD, so I’d hazard a guess that you’re just not looking the right places. There’s even a dedicated href="http://www.3dtorrents.org/index.php?page=torrents">3D torrent site now (registrations are currently open, by the way). And then we have YouTube – the ultimate media liberator of the people, a place where idiots can be become famous and nothing is kept secret – and right now the best place to find amateur 3D content.

    The Technical Stuff:

    Head over to YouTube dedicated href="http://www.youtube.com/select_3d_mode">3D viewing options page to choose first how you’d like to view 3D content. There’s actually quite a few options available.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/viewing-methods.jpg" alt="youtube 3d content" width="580" height="483"/>

    Various colored filters for that old-school comic book 3D: This is pretty much the worst kind of 3D you can get and results in horrendous discoloration, but it’s good of them to allow all the combinations and not just traditional red/blue. You also buy an href="http://www.googlestore.com/You+Tube/Accessories/YouTube+3D+Paper+Glasses+-+Pack+of+10.axd">official set of YouTube 3D glasses if you like.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/red-blue.jpg" alt="youtube 3d videos" width="580" height="499" />

    Interleaved, for some 3DTVs and Zalman passive filter viewing methods.

    Side-by-Side, for Samsung TVs and people who like to go cross-eyed.

    Any 3D video you view will have a little 3D menu in the bottom right where you can quickly access the 3D viewing method page, as well as switch the left/right if it’s reversed, and change the video to full/half width (if you regularly view 3DSBS BlueRay movies, those are run at half-width) /> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/3d-menu-button.png" alt="youtube 3d videos" width="212" height="204" />

    How to Find 3D videos:

    There’s three main ways to find 3D content on YouTube. Firstly, when the service was original launched, a special tag of “yt3D:enable=true” had to be applied to get the 3D button and functionality to appear. That’s not true anymore, but href="http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=yt3d%3Aenable%3Dtrue&aq=f">there’s an archive of stuff in there and some people are still tagging their videos like that, so it’s worth a look.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/yt3d_true.jpg" alt="youtube 3d videos" width="580" height="457"/>

    Secondly, YouTube has href="http://www.youtube.com/user/3D">official 3D channel to highlight some of the better videos.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/3d-channel.jpg" alt="youtube 3d content" width="580" height="293" />

    Thirdly, there’s a number of professional and affiliated channels producing fantastic 3D content, so here’s some of the best ones:

    href="http://www.youtube.com/user/ExploreMediaGroup">ExploreMediaGroup: a good collection of quality content from various sources, mostly trailers and travel videos.

    width="560" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/YJOVwdN5kts" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

    href="http://www.youtube.com/user/S3DGamerZone">S3D Gamer Zone: My personal favourite, I could watch these game videos and walkthroughs all day. The great thing about game content in 3D is that it’s generally done well and high-res, with none of the bad camera movement and poor video quality that accompanies user-shot content.

    width="560" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/WT7NsMtkjdg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

    href="http://www.youtube.com/user/iwatch3d">iWatch3D: Just a regular guy based in London and into 3D, he films various events and locations.

    Of course, just like the regular YouTube 2D the majority of 3D content is so bad I wouldn’t want to waste even a single minute of my life watching it – and those ads at the bottom of the video window are even *more* obnoxious when you’re trying to go cross-eyed. Okay, so maybe you’re not going to find anything to write home about – but it’s innovative, and I like that.

    If you’re interested in YouTube, then be sure to check our href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/youtube/">full range of YouTube tagged articles, as well as these all time favourites:

    • href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-youtube-url-tricks-you-should-know-about/">10 YouTube tricks you should know about

    And for those into 3D, I wrote about href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/play-3d-games-pc-tight-budget/"> how to play games in 3D on your PC on a tight budget.

    Do you know of any other online sources for great 3D video? I for one would love to hear about it, so let us know in the comment. />

    How To Watch The Lunar Eclipse If You Missed It [News]

    Posted on 16 June 2011. Tags: , , , ,

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/eclipse-300x300.png" alt="" />Last night, people all over the world watched the longest lunar eclipse in 100 years. The view was quite different depending on where you were. Some had a perfect view, some areas had the view obscured by clouds or daylight, while in Asia viewers saw an extra red ash glow from the volcanoes in Chile. For those who didn’t get the best view last night, there’s plenty of great footage and photos online today.

    A live feed with extra information from astronomers was provided last night by  class="vt-p" href="http://eclipse.slooh.com/">Slooh. Information remains on the site, but there’s no recorded footage. Google also featured an extremely popular class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgUieQsR4YI">live YouTube eclipse event, but there is no sign of an official full-length recorded replay from Google yet. Google however decided to commemorate the event with a Google Doodle featuring a brief interactive video of the eclipse.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/googleeclipse.png" alt="" width="539" height="226" />

    The Doodle is now off the Google front page but eventually it will be added to the class="vt-p" href="http://www.google.com/logos/">Google Doodle Archive.

    Here’s a professional class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuHpvcgyqes">15 minute video by user class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/user/xRaisen">xRaisen of the lunar eclipse saved for later viewing on YouTube.

    width="580" height="430"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/vuHpvcgyqes?version=3&hl=en_US" /> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vuHpvcgyqes?version=3&hl=en_US" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always">

    The same YouTube user has created a class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOVN3fXUu8c">shortened version of the eclipse which can be watched in under 30 seconds.

    width="580" height="430"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/tOVN3fXUu8c?version=3&hl=en_US" /> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/tOVN3fXUu8c?version=3&hl=en_US" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always">

    Everyday moongazers are beginning to put up their own recordings of the eclipse, which can be found on class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Lunar%20Eclipse%20June%2015&search=tag">YouTube here or on class="vt-p" href="http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=lunar%20eclipse%2015%20june%202011">Flickr here.

    Did you see the eclipse? How was the view where you were? Isn’t it great to be able to watch it online after the event?

    14+ YouTube Playlists To Watch & Learn Computer Programming Quickly

    Posted on 16 June 2011. Tags: , , , , , ,

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/intro11.png" alt="learn computer programming"/>For a lot of students, summer vacation has arrived and it’s an ideal time to stretch out and relax, or alternatively, catch up in your favorite hobbies and perfect your skills. With the advent and growth of YouTube and plenty of href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-12-sites-watch-videos-youtube/">other high-quality video-sharing websites and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/teaching-fun-efficient-proprofs-educational-toolset/">tools like flashcard software, learning new things visually by yourself has never been easier. Even though YouTube is used regularly to share href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/my-top-ten-favourite-funniest-youtube-videos/">comedic href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-funny-youtube-video-channels-worth-keeping/">clips, it’s without a doubt, a rich pool of educational videos . You’ve seen many articles on our site listing some href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-amazing-youtube-channels-subscribe/">amazing YouTube channels to become more educated in href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/educational-youtube-channels/">a variety of general topics, to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-10-youtube-dance-lessons-learn-cool-dance-moves/">learn cool dance moves, even some channels for non-native speakers to href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/youtube-channels-learn-speak-english/">learn and perfect their English, and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-youtube-channels-linux-enthusiasts-follow/">dedicated channels for Linux enthusiasts that learn about Linux news and issues.

    Since it never hurts to learn something new, especially a skill set like computer programming in different languages, we will go over some of the best channels that will introduce you to the world of programming. Let’s look at which channels made the cut.

    href="http://www.youtube.com/user/thenewboston">thenewboston

    href="http://www.youtube.com/user/thenewboston">thenewboston is a truly great channel with an immense collection of programming tutorials. The href="http://www.thenewboston.com/">official website contains a list of all the tutorials made so far, which are well into the thousands (about 1500 videos as of this writing). Not only does it have tutorials for various programming languages, but it also has videos on href="http://www.youtube.com/user/thenewboston#grid/user/C315B2A086BA6AAF">building computers, tutorials for software like Dreamweaver and After Effects, as well as 3D-modeling software. The website now also has plans to present tutorials for a variety of other topics, like Math and Biology. Since all these tutorials are free, thenewboston is probably the greatest source of video tutorials for people interested in beginning programming languages. Bucky, the instructor behind most of the videos, explains concepts like a peer, so his tutorials are definitely very easy to follow and catch up to.

    To jump into thenewboston’s tutorials for different computer programming languages, check out:

    So you can get a taste of thenewboston’s teaching style, here’s a video from this Java series where Bucky explains href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polymorphism_(computer_science)">polymorphism:

    style="text-align: center;"> width="580" height="360"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/0xw06loTm1k?fs=1&hl=en_US" /> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/0xw06loTm1k?fs=1&hl=en_US" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

    thenewboston also has a number of tutorials for different Adobe Products:

    There’s a an impressive number of additional topics that thenewboston has covered already. You can check out all his videos sorted by series at the official website’s Tutorials page href="http://www.thenewboston.com/?page_id=14">here.

    href="http://www.youtube.com/user/xoaxdotnet">Xoaxdotnet (For C++ Tutorials)

    Xoaxdotnet has a variety of tutorials (almost 200 videos) on literature, Algebra, and even neural networks and more general Computer Science concepts (such as href="http://www.youtube.com/user/xoaxdotnet#grid/user/89B61F78B552C1AB">sorting and searching algorithms, as well as big O notation), but for the most part, this channel has focused on and produced lots of C++ tutorials:

    Here’s the first video of this series:

    style="text-align: center;"> width="580" height="465"> name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/WYbeLBVG34I?fs=1&hl=en_US" /> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="465" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/WYbeLBVG34I?fs=1&hl=en_US" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

    Those are probably the most distinctive ones, but be sure to check out the complete list of videos he has produced, sorted by topic href="http://www.youtube.com/user/xoaxdotnet#g/p">here.

    href="http://www.youtube.com/user/phpacademy">phpacademy (For PHP Tutorials)

    Like the channel name suggests, phpacademy focuses on teaching PHP, and some MySQL. href="http://phpacademy.org/videos/index.php?all">With over 200 videos, phpacademy is one of the most subscribed guru channels of the United Kingdom so it’s definitely worth a look if you’re interested in creating more dynamic websites.

    Gmediafinder – Watch & Download YouTube Videos And Music Without Flash [Linux & Windows]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/intro.jpg" alt="download youtube videos" />What’s better than watching class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/youtube/">YouTube videos in your browser? Watching them on your desktop, minus Flash of course! That’s exactly what Gmediafinder for class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/linux/">Linux and class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/windows/">Windows provides – an Adobe-free solution to perusing the YouTube catalogue. With support for video downloads and access to some great content from some other lesser known sources, Gmediafinder hides plenty of tricks up its sleeve.

    If Flash is too cumbersome for you, and you enjoy being able to download your favourite YouTube videos, then Gmediafinder might just be the perfect solution.

    Streaming & Downloading

    The application itself really couldn’t be easier to use. Once launched, the first thing you’ll see is the Playlist view and everything you need to get streaming. Pick a source from the drop-down box (more on sources later), enter a search query and any results that match will be displayed in the left hand column.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/play_youtube.jpg" alt="download youtube videos" width="602" height="521" />

    Then it’s just a single click to load the video (or audio) of your choice in record time – the video doesn’t take long to load as there’s no Flash video player to load first. I found using Gmediafinder much faster than browsing YouTube via a web interface, with the added ability to download too!

    Once you’ve found a video you like and fancy downloading, a small drop-down box should appear next to the Download box under your search results. You can use this to choose your preferred quality of video, which is limited to the versions YouTube has available for streaming.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/downloading_video.png" alt="download music from youtube" width="576" height="466" />

    A simple click of Download takes you to your downloads page, and the video will immediately begin downloading to the location specified in the Download path drop-down box. It’s then up to you to decide what to do with your new FLV or MP4 video.

    By default YouTube will only search for videos at the 640×320 resolution. If you’re after HD content and if your Internet connection can handle it, you’ll want to change this option in Settings. Here you can also turn the other search engines on or off; by default they’re all enabled.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/options.png" alt="download music from youtube" width="576" height="466" />

    Services

    Gmediafinder doesn’t just embrace Flash-free YouTube, but a couple of other sources of entertainment – class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/free-mp3-music-downloads/">MP3 search engines. You know the rules by now – if you don’t own it, it’s not legal. Audio playback is pretty good too, as is downloading files you’ve searched for. You even get a decent selection of visualizations to enjoy whilst you listen.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/audio_playback.jpg" alt="download music from youtube" width="580" height="502" />

    In addition to YouTube, Gmediastreamer supports the following search engines:

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.dilandau.eu/">Dilandau

    A European-run MP3 search engine that allows you to “Download music for FREE”, though with a limited catalogue.

    class="vt-p" href="http://azmp3s.com/">MP3Realm

    Now pointing to azmp3s.com, another slightly shady looking MP3 search engine that offers streaming, downloading and a lyrics lookup service. I’ve noticed not all files will stream, for some unknown reason.

    class="vt-p" href="http://skreemr.com/">Skreemr

    An MP3 search engine that claims to deliver music, remixes, podcasts and ringtones and works well.

    class="vt-p" href="http://tagoo.ru/en/">Tagoo

    A Russian MP3 search engine, quite possibly legal in Russia but probably not anywhere else. Some adverts on the site are probably NSFW (not safe for work) but accessing via Gmediafinder gets rid of those anyway!

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.imusicz.net/">Imusicz

    Another questionable search engine that comes with its own class="vt-p" href="http://status.imusicz.net/">status page that you can check if your results aren’t showing up.

    Download & Install

    To install Gmediafinder on Ubuntu Linux, simply paste the following into a new Terminal window:

    sudo apt-add-repository ppa:s-lagui/ppa /> sudo apt-get update /> sudo apt-get install gmediafinder

    There is a version available for Mandriva Linux at class="vt-p" href="http://gnomefiles.org/content/show.php/Gmediafinder?content=138588">Gnome Files.

    If you’re using another variant of Linux you can try to class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/compile-install-tar-gz-tar-bz2-files-ubuntu-linux/">compile from source, you can find out detailed instructions regarding this at the class="vt-p" href="https://github.com/smolleyes/gmediafinder">Gmediafinder github homepage.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/github.png" alt="download youtube videos" width="580" height="412" />

    Windows users first must download and install class="vt-p" href="http://penguincape.org/downloads/smo/gmediafinder/vcredist_x86.exe">this (32bit) or class="vt-p" href="http://penguincape.org/downloads/smo/gmediafinder/vcredist_x64.exe">this (64bit) and then download and run the Gmediafinder installer from class="vt-p" href="http://penguincape.org/downloads/smo/gmediafinder/gmediafinder_setup.exe">here (both 32bit and 64bit versions). The project doesn’t seem to have a dedicated homepage, though you can find out more at the class="vt-p" href="http://gnomefiles.org/content/show.php/Gmediafinder?content=138588">Gnome Files website.

    Conclusion

    Gmediafinder is a fantastic little tool for those of you who appreciate a Flash-free YouTube experience and the ability to download your favourite video and audio files. The program is responsive, simple and not bogged down with unnecessary extras, making it the slickest streamer and downloader I’ve used in a while.

    Download, stream and give Adobe the heave-ho with Gmediafinder; another fantastic piece of cross-platform freeware. />

    Collect Videos To Watch Later On Your iOS Device Using Squrl

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/logo1.jpg" alt="iphone save video" /> href="http://squrl.com">Squrl is one of the latest video web and mobile apps that takes watching and sharing videos to a new level. Compatible with both the href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/squrl-for-ios/id398256703?mt=8">iPhone and iPad [iTunes link], Squrl is part social network and part bookmark service, like  href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/instapaper-bookmark-posts-read/">Instapaper or href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/read-multiplatform-app-save-information-read/">Read it Later, but for videos. There are several ways Squrl can be used – on a computer alone to save videos for later viewing, or better yet, saving them from your computer for later viewing from the comfort of your couch using your iPad or iPhone. The site provides a handy bookmarklet which makes it easy to save videos without having to open the Squrl website.

    Both the website and mobile app benefit from all the same features, saving and sharing your favourite videos, and the iOS and web interface are practically identical, so you won’t be missing out on anything as far as the Squrl experience is concerned. All features listed in this review of the iOS app also apply to the website itself.

    After downloading the free app from the iTunes store, you’ll be prompted to create a new account, or sign in using your Facebook account. You can also create your account on the Squrl website.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Signup1.jpg" alt="iphone save video" width="580" height="435" />

    If you choose the former, you will then be prompted to connect your Facebook and Twitter accounts to Squrl for easy sharing of the videos you collect and watch using the app.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/TwitterFB.png" alt="iphone save video app" width="580" height="435" />

    Not only can you share individual videos, but you can also share entire collections of videos, as well as selectively share with either your followers, a social network or both at the same time.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Share.png" alt="iphone save video app" width="580" height="295" />

    When it comes to sharing the videos, you won’t have any control over the content of the tweet or Facebook post, with both posts using the same text. and with Facebook, videos aren’t automatically embedded in your profile, but rather they contain a link to the video on Squrl.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Twitter.png" alt="iphone save video app" width="580" height="255" />

    On iOS devices, Squrl is divided into three tabs – My Videos, Discover and Community. Under Discover, you can search for videos using the various services linked in to the app. Squrl aggregates videos from various services including YouTube, Vimeo, TED, Funny or Die and Revision3, amongst others.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/discover.png" alt="iphone save video from web" width="580" height="435" />

    Accessing any given video service will bring you to that site’s homepage as you would see it on the web, and in some cases, such as YouTube, the mobile site will be displayed. You can then search the video service for the videos of your choice and save them.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/search.jpg" alt="iphone save video from web" width="580" height="435" />

    Under My Videos you can access your video queue, your galleries, recent activity and messages. Once you’ve searched for a video, you have two choices of what to do with the video. You can add them to your queue, the home tab when you open Squrl, to quickly watch the video later, or you can create a new gallery of videos, that will be shared with your Squrl followers.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/gallery1.png" alt="iphone save video from web" width="580" height="655" />

    The queue is useful for adding videos you will delete or organise into collections later.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/queue.png" alt="" width="580" height="435" />

    Squrl over-complicates things just a little bit when it comes to creating galleries, as you have to go through two steps when saving videos. First, you add the video to a Gallery.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/gallery2.png" alt="" width="580" height="667" />

    Next you have to add it to yet another sub-category, or Collection. Unless you’re an incredibly organized person, the sub-folder may seem a bit superfluous. It would be nice to have the option to choose between using one or two folders.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/gallery3.png" alt="" width="580" height="660" />

    Your galleries are then viewable as a grid, which can be sorted by date modified, name, most viewed or top rated videos.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/MyVideos.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="435" />

    The last tab, Community, is where Squrl’s social network aspect comes in. While you can easily share videos from Squrl directly with your Twitter or Facebook friends, Squrl also has its own social network built in, where you can follow other members to keep up with the videos they save to their galleries. You can discover other users by keeping an eye on the activity page, displaying the latest videos that have been watched or ‘squrled.’

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Activity.png" alt="" width="580" height="435" />

    You can also keep an eye on the featured galleries, under the Videos tab.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/communityfeatured.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="435" />

    Or you can take a list of the top curators.

    class="aligncenter" style="border: 1px solid black;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/CommunityCurator.png" alt="" width="580" height="435" />

    Not only can you follow users, you can also choose to follow specific collections they have created. To do this, open up the user’s gallery, and click the ‘squrl it’ button at the top of the page. This will then allow you to select which specific collections you want to follow. The gallery will then be added to your Videos page, and when it is updated by its curator, you will receive a notification. You will also receive notifications when shows you subscribe to from sites like Revision3 are updated.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/notification.jpg" alt="iphone save video" width="342" height="247" />

    If there was one more feature we could add to the Squrl wish-list, it would definitely be offline viewing using the iOS app.

    Watch The Videos Your Friends Are Sharing With Showyou [iPad/iPhone]

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/0-showyou-intro.jpg" alt="video sharing iphone app" />When it comes to my iPad, probably my favorite thing to do with it – aside from reading, tweeting, and playing Angry Birds – is watching videos. It’s the perfect device for video watching, whether it’s videos you href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/convert-video-files-ipad-windows-free-ipad-video-converter/">converted and added yourself or those you stream using apps and services like YouTube. We even wrote href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/complete-guide-watching-videos-ipad/">the book on it, which shows you how to utilize all that screen space.

    Flipboard is one popular app that makes use of the iPad’s big screen. For those of you who don’t know, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/flipboard-social-magazine/">Flipboard is an iPad app that takes your Facebook and Twitter streams and displays them in a magazine style.

    Why am I talking about Flipboard? Because href="http://showyou.com/">Showyou is like the Flipboard of video and is one of the coolest iPad apps I’ve come across in a while.

    What Is Showyou?

    Showyou is a fun, social video app that enables you to watch the videos your friends are sharing on Facebook, Twitter, or Vodpod, all in one place, using the Showyou Grid.

    When you first start using Showyou, it will ask you to integrate your Facebook, Twitter, and href="http://vodpod.com">Vodpod (if you have one) accounts. Once you do, it will automatically populate the grid with videos that were posted in your network along with how long ago they were posted.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Screen-shot-2011-04-15-at-12.47.06-AM.jpg" alt="video sharing iphone app" width="547" height="511" />

    The Showyou Grid is pretty awesome. Essentially it’s a customizable 2D grid of nearly 1,000 videos, and it includes a feed where you can watch and talk about videos with your friends on Showyou. You can find and follow your friends on Showyou too, and if they aren’t using the app you can invite them.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Screen-shot-2011-04-15-at-1.02.49-AM.jpg" alt="video sharing iphone" width="529" height="362" />

    When you see a video you really love, you can share it on Showyou or your other connected social networks with a simple tap of your finger. Another social feature is the ability to let friends know you like their videos by “thanking” them.

    You can also share videos you see while browsing the web just by sending an email to share@showyou.com.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Screen-shot-2011-04-15-at-1.00.14-AM.jpg" alt="video sharing iphone app" width="545" height="353" />

    Lastly, you can watch videos being shared by your friends on your television using Airplay and an Apple TV (you’ll need version 2.0) with Showyou, which might just be the best feature of all.

    If you’d like to see Showyou in action, I recommend you check out this quick video:

    width="580" height="430"> name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> name="movie" value="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=21409121&server=vimeo.com&show_title=1&show_byline=1&show_portrait=1&color=00ADEF&fullscreen=1&autoplay=0&loop=0" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=21409121&server=vimeo.com&show_title=1&show_byline=1&show_portrait=1&color=00ADEF&fullscreen=1&autoplay=0&loop=0" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always">

    Conclusion

    While I primarily focused on the iPad app here, Showyou is also available for the iPhone and iPod Touch. You can download the app from iTunes href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/showyou/id422698201?mt=8#">here.

    Showyou puts a nice social twist on the video viewing experience, which made me want to watch more videos. Also, because it pulled from videos my friends were sharing, I noticed a higher level of quality videos on my grid as well. It makes sense, because videos that are worth sharing are much more likely to keep my interest than sifting through a lot of uninteresting ones on giant sites like YouTube.

    The screenshots don’t really do this video sharing app justice, as you have to play around with it yourself to see how fluid everything is. I’ve been spending a lot of time with Showyou and I think it’s one of the better free iPad apps out there.

    What do you think of Showyou? Will you be using it to watch the videos your friends have been sharing? />

    The 9 Types of Computer Viruses To Watch Out For & What They Do

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/virusthumb1.jpg" alt="types of computer viruses" width="250" height="192" />Everyone dreads being the recipient of a computer virus, but not everyone minds studying them. There are researchers who spend a lot of time looking into different types of computer viruses and related security threats in order to determine how they’re programmed, how they do damage, and how they spread. Personally, I find this field interesting, and I enjoy reading about the different types of viruses in existence.

    But even if you don’t know much care, basic knowledge about security threats can be useful. It’s sometimes hard to know how a risk must be dealt with before you know its consequences. With a computer virus, however, the consequence is sometimes complete loss of your data or identity theft – so it’s best to learn sooner rather than later!

    id="more-61903">

    Boot Sector Virus

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/virus1.jpg" alt="types of computer viruses" width="400" height="266" />

    The term “boot sector” is a generic name that seems to originally come from MS-DOS but is now applied generally to the boot information used by any operating system. In modern computers this is usually called the “master boot record,” and it is the first sector on a partitioned storage device.

    Boot sector viruses became popular because of the use of floppy disks to boot a computer. The widespread usage of the Internet and the death of the floppy has made other means of virus transmission more effective.

    Browser Hijacker

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/virus2.jpg" alt="computer viruses" width="367" height="266" />

    This type of virus, which can spread itself in numerous ways including voluntary download, effectively class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/get-geeky-with-hijackthis/">hijacks certain browser functions, usually in the form of re-directing the user automatically to particular sites. It’s usually assumed that this tactic is designed to increase revenue from web advertisements.

    There are a lot of such viruses, and they usually have “search” included somewhere in their description. class="vt-p" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CoolWebSearch">CoolWebSearch may be the most well known example, but others are nearly as common.

    Direct Action Virus

    This type of virus, unlike most, only comes into action when the file containing the virus is executed. The payload is delivered and then the virus essentially becomes dormant – it takes no other action unless an infected file is executed again.

    Most viruses do not use the direct action method of reproduction simply because it is not prolific, but viruses of this type have done damage in the past. The class="vt-p" href="http://www.mcafee.com/threat-intelligence/malware/default.aspx?id=1337">Vienna virus, which briefly threatened computers in 1988, is one such example of a direct action virus.

    File Infector Virus

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/virus3.jpg" alt="computer viruses" width="321" height="239" />

    Perhaps the most common type of virus, the file infector takes root in a host file and then begins its operation when the file is executed. The virus may completely overwrite the file that it infects, or may only replace parts of the file, or may not replace anything but instead re-write the file so that the virus is executed rather than the program the user intended.

    Although called a “file virus” the definition doesn’t apply to all viruses in all files generally – for example, the macro virus below is not referred to by the file virus. Instead, the definition is usually meant to refer only to viruses which use an executable file format, such as .exe, as their host.

    Macro Virus

    A wide variety of programs, including productivity applications like Microsoft Excel, provide support for Macros – special actions programmed into the document using a specific macro programming language. Unfortunately, this makes it possible for a virus to be hidden inside a seemingly benign document.

    Macro viruses very widely in terms of payload. The most well known macro virus is probably class="vt-p" href="http://www.mcafee.com/threat-intelligence/malware/default.aspx?id=10132">Melissa, a Word document supposedly containing the passwords to pornographic websites. The virus also exploited Word’s link to Microsoft Outlook in order to class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-ways-people-infected-email-virus-case-wondering/">automatically email copies of itself.

    Multipartite Virus

    While some viruses are happy to spread via one method or deliver a single payload, Multipartite viruses want it all. A virus of this type may spread in multiple ways, and it may take different actions on an infected computer depending on variables, such as the operating system installed or the existence of certain files.

    Polymorphic Virus

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/virus4.jpg" alt="types of computer viruses" width="310" height="340" />

    Another jack-of-all-trades, the Polymorphic virus actually mutates over time or after every execution, changing the code used to deliver its payload. Alternatively, or in addition, a Polymorphic virus may guard itself with an encryption algorithm that automatically alters itself when certain conditions are met.

    The goal of this trickery is evasion. Antivirus programs often find viruses by the specific code used. Obscuring or changing the code of a virus can help it avoid detection.

    Resident Virus

    This broad virus definition applies to any virus that inserts itself into a system’s memory. It then may take any number of actions and run independently of the file that was originally infected.

    A resident virus can be compared to a direct payload virus, which does not insert itself into the system’s memory and therefore only takes action when an infected file is executed.

    Web Scripting Virus

    Many websites execute complex code in order to provide interesting content. Displaying class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/18-free-ways-to-download-any-video-off-the-internet/">online video in your browser, for example, requires the execution of a specific code language that provides both the video itself and the player interface.

    Of course, this code can sometimes be exploited, making it possible for a virus to infect a computer or take actions on a computer through a website. Although malicious sites are sometimes created with purposely infected code, many such cases of virus exist because of code inserted into a site without the webmaster’s knowledge.

    Conclusion

    I’ve included every type of computer virus in this article that I felt was relevant, but this isn’t a list of every type of virus known to man. Also, I did not include any worms or trojans, two common threats that are similar to viruses but technically not the same. If there is a specific type of virus that you feel was missed and is important, let us know in the comments. />

    Watch 5 Cool Fan Films Online & Keep Track Of Other Upcoming Fan Productions

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Ticket.jpg" alt="fan films" width="250" height="167" />Thanks to mediums like YouTube and other free video hosting sites like Daily Motion and Vimeo, it’s easy to showcase a fan film. The making of a fan film is another story however. A casual YouTube search will reveal a lot which border on the ridiculous and some which go over even that edge.

    But for every dark side, there’s the good one as well. When you take a look at few of the better ones below, you can fault them only for not having the length of a full feature, the sci-fi slickness, or the starry razzmatazz.

    If you go in with low expectations, you will be pleasantly surprised by the passion and the creativity. Heck, scratch that. Go in with high ones, you will be surprised anyway.

    id="more-60130">

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.thehuntforgollum.com/">The Hunt for Gollum

    classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="580" height="430" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/9H09xnhlCQU?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" /> name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/9H09xnhlCQU?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

    The original Lord of The Rings trilogy’s production costs and grosses could have paid off the debt of a couple of nations. Then we come to this ‘prequel’ of LOTR that cost probably what it took to make Gandalf’s beard in the original. At $5,000, the ode to LOTR is unofficial and unauthorized. But with 5.5 million views on YouTube, you can’t argue with the appeal of this 40 minute long fan film shot in high definition.

    Check out the trailers and the film’s website. You will be fooled into thinking of this as a major Hollywood release.

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.renacimientofilm.com/">Star Wars

    classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="580" height="430" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/lBUN8wwJurM?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" /> name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/lBUN8wwJurM?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

    Picking the best Star Wars fan film from the hundreds that dot the Star Wars galaxy is best left to George Lucas himself. Lucas Films has an official class="vt-p" href="http://www.atom.com/channel/channel_star_wars">Star Wars Fan Movie Challenge where they hand out awards to the best fan film that goes over to the Star Wars side. So, to be on the safe side I have just picked one from the hat. You can check out the other really good ones under the link on the line above. This one got the Audience Choice Award this year. But the one which is usually considered the best Star Wars fan film is class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxLB1hGKnsA&feature=player_embedded">Troops.

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.hiddenfrontier.com/">Star Trek Hidden Frontier

    If Star Wars is there then the fans of Star Trek will not be far behind. The number of Star Trek fan shot films (88) are not as numerous as Star Wars (317) but unlike it, many of them are made in the format of episodes just like the original series. So, let’s start with the one that almost got its own cult status in the fan film genre. The videos on the main site seem to be down for now, so head over to class="vt-p" href="http://vimeo.com/hiddenfrontier">Vimeo to catch the 50 episodes on the crew of USS Excelsior and their deep space adventures. class="vt-p" href="http://">Hidden Frontier also has a channel on YouTube.

    The Star Trek Universe expands with another fans series, class="vt-p" href="http://www.startreknewvoyages.com/">Star Trek: Phase II. The creators aim to release one episode every year and class="vt-p" href="http://www.startreknewvoyages.com/episodes.html">five episodes have been uploaded so far. You can choose to watch them online or download them to your computer.

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.collorastudios.com/projects/bde/bdemain.htm">Batman Dead End

    classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="580" height="460" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Hjp0I_okX0w?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" /> name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="460" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Hjp0I_okX0w?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

    For interest value I would go with Batman Dead End. How would The Caped Crusader fare against the Joker, Predator, and the Alien? It would take two Hollywood studios lots of dollars to tell us. But Sandy Collora says it with $30,000 and in eight minutes. Batman is a bit stocky, but the dark alley and hoarse voice gives the whole fan film the Christopher Nolan treatment. But of course, Nolan’s take came two years down the line to this one.

    If you want more of Batman, don’t miss class="vt-p" href="http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xdpig1_city-of-scars_shortfilms">City of Scars (also uploaded on class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cl9zoeT8pVo&feature=related">YouTube in two parts). It runs for nearly half an hour and is in HD with crisp production values. This short film explores the dark psyche of Batman/Bruce Wayne.

    class="vt-p" href="http://timeandagain.t35.com/">Dr. Who – Time and Again

    classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="580" height="460" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/eMZzXNJ1K34?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" /> name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="460" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/eMZzXNJ1K34?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

    The British sc-fi series has a huge following around the world and its popularity is assured when you know that the central character of Dr. Who has appeared on stage, TV, film, comics, novels, and everything in between. Fan films are one of the things that falls in between all the regular channels. There are a whopping 145 of them as listed by class="vt-p" href="http://www.fanfilms.net/c/doctorwho">Fanfilms.net. The advantage Dr. Who has over the others is that you don’t need to spend a dime on special effects or detailed getups. It’s difficult to pick out one, but I will go with Time and Again.

    Catch Your Favorite Team & Watch Live College Football Online For Free!

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/collegefootball.png" />The air is getting crisp, leaves are changing colors and beginning their descent from the trees. One of my favorite seasons is upon us, at least in the northern hemisphere. That means fall has arrived, and it is also the beginning of the College Football season!

    After cutting the cable and moving to free legal streaming via href="http://makeuseof.com/tags/boxee">Boxee and other services, we really haven’t missed much programming at all. I was worried that the one sport I do follow, NCAA College Football – or American Football as the rest of the world calls it – would have to be dropped since I hadn’t heard of any live streaming from ABC or ESPN, which carries the majority of the college football programming since it holds the major contract with NCAA. This year I seem to be in luck.

    id="more-53533">

    ESPN3

    Fortunately for most home high speed internet users in the US there is a great option, with a caveat. href="http://espn.go.com/espn3/index">ESPN3 is the online ’station’ from ESPN which has a wide variety of sports programming, even beyond NCAA football. They carry programming from all of the other ESPN networks and that includes NFL Football, Baseball, Racing, Soccer and more. The quality of the stream is actually pretty good and scales depending on your bandwidth and processing power.

    The caveat, and it might be a major one for you, is that ESPN3 is available only to users who subscribe to an ISP which has already paid for the privilege of streaming it. Basically, when an ISP signs up ESPN whitelists your ISP’s IP address ranges only allowing access to their service to those ISPs who have paid for it.

    If your ISP is not one of the cooperating ones, you will be forwarded to ESPN Player and prompted to purchase the college pass which is about $20 a month. The screen looks like this:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/espnplayer.png" />

    However if your ISP is one of the href="http://espn.go.com/espn3/affList">participating affiliates (some of the larger ones are AT&T, Comcast, Verizon and Road Runner), visiting the player will bring up a list of currently live streaming games:

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/espn3list.png" />

    After opening the href="http://espn.go.com/espn3/index">main site, click on a game and a new window pops up with the streaming player.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/espn3player.png" />

    The quality of the video will automatically adjust based on your CPU and bandwidth available, and while not full HD (eg. 720p or 1080i) the quality is pretty decently and looks good at a normal television set distance. Click href="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/espn3full.png">here to see a full screen screenshot of the feed at the 4 out of 5 level. I never hit 5/5 even though I should have plenty of bandwidth and a Core i7 CPU, so I’m not sure what the ‘full’ feed looks like but would be curious if anyone has a screencapture of it!

    Other Options

    Not all College Football games are carries on ESPN/ABC, however. There are a few options although I have not found any of them to be as reliable, and of questionable legality, as the ESPN feeds. You can sometimes find your game on href="http://www.ustream.tv/">Ustream or href="http://www.justin.tv/directory/featured">Justin.tv – do a search for your team’s name. I also seemed to find a lot of games online at href="http://www.channelsurfing.net/">ChannelSurfing which may work in a pinch.

    Also, if streaming online is not your cup of tea and if you live within the broadcast area of the major networks such as ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox, you may be able to pull in their video Off The Air (OTA) using a TV tuner such as the HD Homerun from href="http://www.silicondust.com/">SiliconDust or href="http://www.hauppauge.com/">Hauppauge HVR line of products. This isn’t streaming or even watching it online, but it does provider a cheaper alternative than paying for Cable TV.

    The Future of Sports Streaming Online

    With more and more content providers offering live events online for stream (NCAA March Madness is another example), it is good to see such a high quality content available, even if it isn’t totally free (even though it technically is free to the end-user, you are paying or it indirectly with your subscription to high speed internet). With more and more people ‘cutting the cable’, we will see more content being offered to ISPs as a way to create more revenue from non-cable subscribers.

    Finally a warning – some sites that I did find are definitely of questionable legal standing and also may install spyware on your PC. Make sure not to click on ‘OK’ if they want to install a plugin, especially Internet Explorer users. If they are looking for a credit card number, I would also shy away since there is a good chance these are scam sites trying to offer something for nothing.

    How do you get your streaming sports online? Other major networks, such as Fox, do not yet offer online streaming as far as I know. Do you have any other sites you would recommend? />

    Watch Folders & Convert Video Files With DropFolders & HandBrake

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/0-dropfolders-intro.png" alt="convert video files" width="242" height="242" />Having the ability to convert video files can be pretty useful, especially if you download a lot of video content or create some yourself. There are a lot of potential uses, including converting DVD files into a playable format or making files readable on your iPod, to name a few. Being able to automate this process is even better.

    DropFolders can handle all of this for you. href="http://ctl.du.edu/staff/josephlabrecque/DropFolders/">DropFolders is an Adobe AIR program to be run on Windows that integrates with HandBrake. It automates the video conversion process by watching specified folders and performing the actions you assign.

    id="more-50999"> /> In this article, I am going to go over what HandBrake is capable of, as well as how its integration with DropFolders will allow you free reign over your video collection.

    HandBrake

    href="http://handbrake.fr/">HandBrake, by itself, is one of the best free media converters and href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-simple-steps-rip-entire-dvd-hard-drive/">DVD ripping tools out there. It is an open-source, multi-platform video transcoder that is available for Mac OS X, Linux, and Windows.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/1-dropfolders-handbrake.png" alt="convert video files" width="580" height="472" />

    HandBrake supports all the different variations of DVD source files, including VIDEO_TS, DVD image, real DVD, and some .VOB and .TS files. It also has miscellaneous features such as chapter selection, href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-use-handbrake-to-attach-subtitles-to-a-movie-file/">adding subtitles, an integrated bitrate calculator, picture cropping and scaling, and live video preview.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/2-dropfolders-presets.png" alt="convert video freeware" width="266" height="290" />

    Supported file outputs:

    • File format: MP4 and MKV
    • Video: MPEG-4, H.264, or Theora
    • Audio: AAC, MP3, or Vorbis

    [Note]: You do not need to install HandBrake separately in order to use DropFolders. However, I recommend that you do anyway because HandBrake itself is a great video conversion tool and you may not always need the features DropFolders provides.

    DropFolders

    href="http://ctl.du.edu/staff/josephlabrecque/DropFolders/">DropFolders allows you to automate some of HandBrake’s features. Simply put, you can use DropFolders to watch a folder, convert the files within, and output the new files to a different folder.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/3-dropfolders-main.png" alt="convert video freeware" width="506" height="508" />

    For those of you who are familiar with HandBrake, you will know that you can tweak various settings with the href="https://trac.handbrake.fr/wiki/CLIGuide">CLIGuide. DropFolders allows for this too. To better specify how you would like your video files to be converted, you have to input various HandBrake arguments.

    For example, in order to make a video file compatible on the iPhone or iTouch, you just need to copy and paste the href="https://trac.handbrake.fr/wiki/BuiltInPresets#iphone">iPhone presets into the HandBrake arguments box on DropFolders.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/4-dropfolders-arguments.png" alt="convert video files" width="506" height="284" />

    Once a compatible file is placed into your defined watch folder, DropFolders will automatically start the conversion process and your presets will be saved for later selection. In this example, the newly created file would be placed in your chosen destination folder, ready to be copied over to your iPhone/iTouch.

    As stated above, you can find all of the necessary presets for HandBrake on their href="https://trac.handbrake.fr/wiki/CLIGuide">CLIGuide page. DropFolders handles all of the file input and output commands, so the only presets you’ll need are the encoding parameters, which you can copy and paste over.

    If you would like to see DropFolders in action, check out this video walkthrough by Joseph Labrecque, creator of the program:

    classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="580" height="326" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> name="src" value="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=12337742&server=vimeo.com&show_title=1&show_byline=1&show_portrait=1&color=00ADEF&fullscreen=1&autoplay=0&loop=0" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="326" src="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=12337742&server=vimeo.com&show_title=1&show_byline=1&show_portrait=1&color=00ADEF&fullscreen=1&autoplay=0&loop=0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

    Conclusion

    If you play around with the various settings I’m sure there are plenty of creative ways to use this application. With DropFolders monitoring your specified media folders and convert video files automatically, you can efficiently create the content you’re looking for without having to open and convert files individually using commercial software.
