Hacked Websites Target Android Devices With New Trojan [Updates]

Posted on 03 May 2012. Tags: , , , , , ,

A new piece of Android malware called NotCompatible is attempting to spread itself by attacking Android users who visit hacked websites. Android owners are advised to remain vigilant against these attacks.

The malware is notable because it marks the first time this kind of attack is known to have been used against Android devices in the wild. The way it works is simple. A hacked website hosts a malicious app, which is then transmitted to every Android handset that visits the site. It’s a tactic that’s been used against PCs for years but is now making the transition to mobile devices.

Fortunately, Android’s built-in security does a decent job of thwarting the attack. Because apps require permissions the usual permission screen will appear when the malware tries to install itself. Users who have not chosen to allow the installation of unofficial apps won’t be able to complete the installation even if they accept the app.

Still, there is some threat. When the malware appears it poses as a security update and declares a limited number of permissions. This may lure some users into thinking that it’s harmless or even a valid system update. False-flag attacks like this rely on mass distribution. Their creators know most people won’t fall for it – but some small number will.

The app is a trojan, but the payload and/or purpose is unknown. It connects to a command and control server but then does nothing. Of course, the server can send new instructions at any time, and likely will at some point in the future.

3 Websites To Find The Records Of Your Favorite Mixed Martial Arts Fighters

Posted on 03 May 2012. Tags: , , , , , , ,

martial arts recordsOne of the most important things about Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is the fighter’s record. When a fight is happening, and you are trying to make your picks and decide who is going to win, the first thing to look at is the fighter’s record. Those two to four numbers (win, loss, draw and no-contest, in that order) can tell you so much about the fighter. If a fighter has a record of 10-1 and he is going up against a fighter who is 6-5, you can probably assume that the 10-1 fighter is going to win (though no guarantees. Nothing is guaranteed with four-ounce MMA gloves).

Finding the records of your favorite fighters is easy, if you know where to look. There are lots of websites out there that keep track of fighter information, but some of them are less accurate than others. Fear not though, after reading this amazing article you will be ready to find out the record of every fighter in the UFC and in all the smaller promotions.

Wikipedia

This might seem like an obvious choice, as Wikipedia generally has the answer for everything, but it is also a great place for fighter records. Wikipedia sets itself apart from the dedicated MMA websites because of how quickly it is updated when a fight happens. You can literally pull up the Wikipedia page seconds after a fight ends and see it reflected on the records of the two athletes involved.

martial arts records

The other thing that I enjoy about reading a fighter’s record on Wikipedia is the notes section for each match. This spot will typically tell you if the fight was for a championship, whether it received a fight of the night of the award or if a fighter is making their debut in a new weight class.

martial arts ranks

Wikipedia also offers breakdowns by method of victory. It will tell you how the fight ended for each fight (knockout, submission, decision, etc.) and give an overall breakdown of the fighter’s career. For example, if a fighter is 10-1 it might show 5 wins via knockout, 2 wins via submission and 3 wins via decision.

Sherdog

Sherdog is the go to place for most hardcore MMA fans who want to check the record of a fighter. Most MMA promotions use Sherdog to find the “official” version of a fighter’s record. I put official in quotes because fighters who have been around a long time will often have older fights that are not reflected on their record, regardless of which source you check.

martial arts ranks

Sherdog’s records are a visual experience. When you click on a fighter, their page shows the breakdown of their methods of victory, and it shows a sort of graph, so not only can you see the numbers, you get a visual representation of how they typically win their fights. As with any good record keeping site, it provides a breakdown for each fight on the fighter’s record.

martial arts ranks

The other nice thing about Sherdog is that they are a dedicated MMA site, so if you scroll below the fighter’s record you can see recent photos, videos and articles about that fighter. With Sherdog, you can find out everything you ever wanted to know about a particular athlete.

The Underground

The Underground (a.k.a. mixedmartialarts.com and MMA.tv) is one of my favorite websites on the Internet for its message board, but hidden behind the shenanigans that take place there is one of the more robust fighter record sections around. It may not have nearly as much visual appeal as Sherdog, but for information, it is just as good.

martial arts ranks titles

The Underground has tried to gather more information from old fights that were not part of any athletic commission. They are trying to prevent records from being incorrect due to the old days. As a result of this, a fight on their page will say either “Official” or “NSF.” Official obviously means it was a fight that was reported to the athletic commission and NSF stands for non-sanctioned fight, or one that was not overseen by a governing body.

The record pages will also show a little picture of a championship belt if a title was on the line in the fight.

martial arts records

Like Sherdog, the Underground is a full MMA site, so fighter pages feature all kinds of other information such as news stories and videos involving the fighter.

Conclusion

With these websites, you will be able to find out everything you ever wanted to know about your favorite MMA fighters. You can even use the record pages for these fighters to find out when they are fighting next. If you want to know when the great Chael Sonnen is going to be taking on Anderson Silva, these websites can help you.
