20 Fun Things To Do Online When You’re Bored At Work

fun things to do onlineWe all love working, don’t we? I’m sure none of you reading this would have it any other way than to sit at a desk for hours with little to show for it other than a meager wage. Those long hours spent in an office working on a computer never get tiresome, dull, or frustrating, do they? Or am I wrong in this assumption?

Yes, yes I am. Even the best jobs have their bad points, those moments when boredom sets in and there is nothing you’d like more in the world than head home and drop into bed. Or possibly out for a few beers. Thankfully there are alternative ways to relieve the boredom at times such as these. As long as you have access to the Internet and a way of bypassing the firewalls and filters your company has likely installed.

What follows are 20 (and many more besides) fun things to do online when you’re bored at work. Just don’t get caught by the boss.

Read

The Onion

fun things to do online

The Onion labels itself as America’s Finest News Source. And it is, assuming you like your news to be funny yet wholly inaccurate.

The Daily Mash

fun stuff to do online

The Daily Mash is the British version of The Onion, providing laughs and made-up news with a UK bias.

Literally Unbelievable

fun stuff to do online

Literally Unbelievable exists because some people are too dumb to realize stories from the above sites aren’t based on the truth. Society is screwed.

Damn You Auto Correct!

fun stuff to do online

Damn You Auto Correct! logs all those times when your smartphone auto-corrects your messages to make you look like a fool. Intentionally, of course.

You could also read comic eBooks.

Look

Garfield Minus Garfield

things to do online

Garfield Minus Garfield does what it says on the tin – removes Garfield from the old Garfield cartoon strips. Which leaves Jon Arbuckle talking to himself. And looking slightly deranged as a result.

People Of Walmart

things to do online

People of Walmart is a site dedicated to the store everyone shops in but no one wants to be spotted in. The sights on offer will leave you permanently scarred but laughing like a drain at the same time.

Awkward Family Photos

things to do online

Awkward Family Photos captures those moments most of us would like forgotten. It was bad enough having these images locked away in an album under lock and key. Now they’re on the Web for all to see.

Scrolldit

Scrolldit pares Reddit down to just the images people are sharing. In other words, the good stuff you don’t want to miss. Perfect fodder for sharing on social networks when you’re bored.

You could also play picture games based on Flickr.

Watch

Talking Animals

Talking Animals is a YouTube channel which anthropomorphizes household pets. Your cat or dog isn’t as dumb as it may sometimes appear to be. At least if you believe these guys.

Quirkology

Quirkology is the perfect YouTube channel for those bored out of their minds at work. These are experiments anyone can do, most without any kind of special equipment.

The Gregory Brothers

The Gregory Brothers are a walking YouTube video factory. Thanks to Autotune The News and Songify This, this comedy troupe have become insanely popular. The Bed Intruder Song is still a must-see.

Jonathan Mann

Jonathan Mann is the man of just one voice, but 1,000 songs (and counting). Most of us would struggle to write even one song, while this guy has managed to write a new one every day for the past three years.

You could also visit video sites better than YouTube.

Play

Google Pacman

Google Pacman is perfect to play for five minutes when you’re bored at work. This is Pacman built around the Google logo. It started out as a Google Doodle before being archived to its own domain.

Bastion

Bastion is a perfect slice of indie gaming that is now available to play directly in Google Chrome. The full game needs to be bought but the Chrome extension offers a highly-playable demo.

Minecraft Classic

Minecraft Classic is free to play directly in the browser. And it’s well worth doing so, as Danny discovered last month.

Zynga

Zynga is the current leader in the social games sector. Its website therefore offers a portal which will offer simple pleasures for those with five minutes to spare.

You could also play Facebook Games and/or Google+ Games.

Laugh

Animals Being Dicks

Animals Being Dicks features gifs of animals being, well, dicks. Updated daily, this Tumblr-powered site is pretty much guaranteed to make you laugh. Unless you’ve had a sense of humor bypass.

Fail Blog

Fail Blog features videos, images, and stories all with one thing in common – someone, somewhere has failed in an epic manner. Part of the Cheezburger Network so more laughs can be had with very few clicks.

Criggo

Criggo is an online compendium of mistakes found in newspapers and magazines. Unlike with their online versions, these will remain forever, haunting some editor or another.

Dilbert

fun things to do online

Dilbert is Dilbert, the same comic strip that has been appearing in multiple publications since 1989. Corporate culture and the technology which shapes it has changed, but Dilbert remains as funny as ever.

You could also laugh at these geeky websites.

Lest We Forget…

And finally let’s not forget MakeUseOf.com itself. Need I say more? OK, just a little. As you’re already here and reading this article you will know MakeUseOf is the best place on the Web to find things to make use of. And that includes links to websites and apps which will prevent boredom setting in whether at work or at home.  Also, don’t forget our Geeky Fun section if you want a few laughs.

Conclusion

With many of us being connected to the Internet most of our waking lives, there is really no need to ever be bored. There are roughly 200 million websites online at this moment in time. At least a few (million) of them will appeal to you personally and help to kill time at work.

The ones outlined above are just the tip of the iceberg. Explore! And then come back and let us know what you found. Just keep it clean, please.

6 Best Desktop eBook Readers For Reading At Home (Or At Work)

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/books.jpg" alt="desktop ebook reader" />Do some reading on your computer. Whether you’re looking for free access to classic works of literature or desktop access to your current Kindle, Kobo or Nook books, there is a wide variety of eBook readers out there so you can read on your computer. Reading on a computer isn’t without its advantages. The screen is big, so you can make the font as big as you want; perfect if you have vision problems.

More than anything, though, reading on a computer is nice because it’s a device you already have. Buying expensive hardware just to do one thing can be pricey, especially when computers can do pretty much everything those devices can (and more).  As Mark once asked href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/who-needs-the-amazon-kindle-when-you-have-a-netbook/">who needs the Kindle if you have a netbook?

Here’s a list of what I think are the best desktop eReaders out there. Be sure to check out the comments below to find out what software your fellow readers recommend.

Calibre: The Ultimate eBook Software

Sometimes called the iTunes of eBooks, Calibre is the ultimate way to manage your collection on a desktop computer. It’s compatible with seemingly every known ebook format on the planet, and supports sending books to a wide variety of handheld ereaders and smartphones.

This program does too much for me to describe here, so find out all about Calibre in href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/download-open-book-managing-ebooks-calibre/">Open Book: Managing Your eBooks With Calibre, a free MakeUseOf download. This eBook, by Lachlan Roy, outlines pretty much everything you need to know.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/openbook-3page.png" alt="Calibre eBook Reader" width="580" height="270" />

Know this too, though – Calibre features a full-featured eBook reader as well as collection management. So if you want to manage and read your eBooks, Calibre is all you need.

Google Books

Prefer using something in your browser? That makes sense. You might not be able to install software on your work computer, or you might switch computers regularly. Whatever your reason, you should check out href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/find-beautiful-free-ebooks-googles-shop/">Google Books, which gives you access to an eBook reader in your browser.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/google-bestofthefree.png" alt="Google ebook reader" width="577" height="258" />

Google’s store offers thousands of titles for sale, and a wide variety of free books as well. A minimalist reader in your browser stays out of your way so you can do what you want to do – read.

Firefox EPUB Extension

Do you want to read in your browser, but have already downloaded the EPUB files you want to read? You’re in luck! href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/epubreader-read-epub-ebooks/">A Firefox extension for reading EPUB files works really well, and is free to install right now. You’ll need to be using Firefox, of course, but it’s a great lightweight eBook reader some may love.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/dir/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Optimized-epub.jpg" alt="Firefox ebook reader epub" width="571" height="528" />

Magic Scroll

Upload your EPUB file so you can read it in your browser. href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/magic-scroll-beautiful-online-html5-epub-book-reader/">MagicScroll is a great web-based eBook reader, featuring a very minimal interface and intuitive keyboard shortcuts. Reading with this software is a pleasure, so I suggest you check it out if the other programs aren’t to your taste.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/magicscroll-reading.png" alt="magicscroll ebook reader" width="580" height="254" />

Kindle

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/kindle_ebook_reader.jpg" alt="Kindle ebook reader" width="496" height="397" />

Do you already own a href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/kindle/">Kindle eReader, or make use of the Kindle app on your smartphone? Make sue you install the href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=amb_link_352814002_3?ie=UTF8&docId=1000493771&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-6&pf_rd_r=1A8JHVFYDJA9T39WMXZP&pf_rd_t=1401&pf_rd_p=1279039382&pf_rd_i=1000426311">Kindle software for your desktop computer, then. You’ll be able to read your Kindle eBooks on your desktop. Best of all, your pages and bookmarks will stay in sync with your device.

Kobo

Own a Kobo instead of a Kindle? Me too! Good news: href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/kobo-thousands-free-books-computer-smartphone/">Kobo’s desktop software gives you access to thousands of free eBooks, and it’s free to download.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/kobo-browsefree.png" alt="kobo ebook reader" width="578" height="322" />

You can manage the books on your Kobo account, which can wirelessly sync with your device. Even if you don’t own a Kobo, however, this software is worth checking out.

Nook

Are you a Nook user? You should check out the href="http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/free-nook-apps/379002321/">Nook software then. Like the above two programs, this eBook reader gives you access to books you’ve purchased at its respective store, and syncs. Check it out!

Conclusion

There you have it – the six best desktop eBook readers for your computer at home or work. Disagree with the list? Let me know, because I’m always willing to learn. I’ll be in the comments below, waiting to hear from you.

3 Ways To Add & Access Windows 7 Shortcuts To Work More Productively With Your Mouse

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/DesktopShortcut01.png?54167" alt="" />When it comes to using the computer, there are essentially two groups of people: those that always have their hands on the keyboard and are obsessed with keyboard shortcuts and those that do everything technically possible with the mouse. If you belong to the latter group, this article is for you.

In this article I will show you how to optimize your Windows 7 desktop for working with the mouse and point out tricks to increase your productivity.

1. Enable Toolbars & Quick Launch Bar

Keeping all your program shortcuts on the desktop is not very productive if it’s always covered by open windows. Hence the better solution is to enable Taskbar Toolbars for your most used programs or add program and folder shortcuts to the Quick Launch Bar.

Add Taskbar Toolbar:

  • right-click Taskbar
  • expand > Toolbars
  • check desired toolbar or select > New Toolbar…

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/DesktopShortcut02.png?54167" border="0" alt="add taskbar toolbar" />

You can turn any folder into a custom toolbar and fill it with shortcuts. />

Enable Quick Launch Bar:

Per default, the Quick Launch bar is disabled in Windows 7. However, it’s quite simple to add it.

  • follow steps above and select > New toolbar…
  • under > Folder enter the path > %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch and click > Select Folder
  • to customize your new Quick Launch toolbar, unlock the taskbar
  • you can now right-click > Quick Launch and set your preferences
  • while the taskbar is unlocked you can also drag and drop it to a different location

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/DesktopShortcut03.png?54167" border="0" alt="add quick launch bar" />

You can now use the Quick Launch bar to hold shortcuts for frequently used programs, folders, or files. Simply drag and drop them from the desktop into the Quick Launch bar.

2. Use Aero Peek

Aero Peek is a Windows 7 features that replaces the ‘show desktop’ shortcut that was formerly found in the Quick Launch bar. If you don’t want to clutter your Taskbar with toolbars or a Quick Launch bar and prefer to keep your shortcuts on the desktop, Aero Peek allows you to quickly show the desktop using your mouse. Simply move the mouse to the bottom right of your screen. After a second, all windows will become transparent and the desktop will show. A left-click will minimize all open windows and another left-click will restore them.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Aero02.png?54167" border="0" alt="show desktop with aero peek" />

3. Add class="vt-p" title="Handy Shortcuts" href="http://www.thewindowsclub.com/create-windows-desktop-shortcuts-easily-with-handy-shortcuts">Handy Shortcuts To Your Desktop

Handy Shortcuts is a free portable app for Windows 7 and Windows Vista that can add up to 20 different Windows functions as shortcuts to your desktop. Simply download and run the executable file, then click > Create next to the Windows functions you wish to see as shortcuts on your desktop.

My favorite three shortcuts are:

  • Shutdown Windows
  • Add and Remove Program
  • Safely Remove Hardware

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/DesktopShortcut04.png?54167" border="0" alt="add desktop shortcuts" />

We have previously reviewed a similar tool for Windows XP here: class="vt-p" title="Windows System Tools at your Fingertips with FastKake" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/windows-system-tools-at-your-fingertips-with-fastkake/">Windows System Tools at your Fingertips with FastKake.

    Get Your Foot In The Door Next Time You Need Work By Leveraging Your Facebook Connections

    class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/shutterstock_69143623.jpg" alt="facebook job hunting">Can there ever be too many good ways to look for new jobs? I don’t think so – and I think most job seekers would agree that if it leads to work it’s worth a try. In the Door has created a new, innovative way of searching for work by using your Facebook contacts as leads for jobs that are already advertised.

    href="http://www.inthedoor.com/">In The Door revolves around the adage that “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know”. It’s true – what you know merely gets your resumé on the pile along with that of every other talented jobseeker, whereas the people you know can tell the person doing the hiring that you’re the one for the job. In The Door seeks to make it easy to match who you know with the jobs out there.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/In-The-Door-Logo.png" alt="facebook job hunting">

    Using In The Door

    The process is simple. You sign up to In The Door with your Facebook login and a list of contacts is automatically generated for you. The contact list features any of your contacts who have entered employer or location information – it’s not limited to people who have already signed up with In The Door. This makes it easy to get started, since you don’t have to wait for a critical mass of friends signing up to In The Door. You may wish some more of them would add relevant information and make it shareable to applications, but if you have enough friends on Facebook it won’t matter that not all of them share this information.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Previous-positions.png" alt="facebook job hunting tips">

    Finding Jobs

    Using the site, you will realise that you can browse by location, search for specific keywords or location, or browse the companies represented by your friends. This gives you a wide variety of ways to find work using In The Door. When you find a job you’re interested in, you can always view your contact at the company, allowing you to arrange an introduction.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Event-Manager-Job.png" alt="facebook job hunting tips">

    Browse Companies

    Currently, In The Door is still quite new and most of the jobs are USA only. But this will expand quickly and doesn’t completely stop non-USA users from making use of the site. Browsing the companies your friends work for still has advantages, since you could use that information to chat to the friends you know who work (or previously worked) at the company of your choice. It’s easy to see at a glance where your friends work using In The Door. It’s certainly much easier than browsing your friends’ Facebook profiles individually or searching all the companies that sound appropriate.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Jobs.png" alt="">

    Once you find a company you like, the jobs available there are clear to see.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Price-Waterhouse.png" alt="facebook job hunt">

    Search by Keywords

    Searching by keyword means you can narrow down the exact role you’re interested in, or you can search by role as well as location. Handy if you’re not willing to move!

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Writer-Search.png" alt="facebook job hunt">

    Location Search

    The location search page works on the assumption that you’re most likely to want to live in cities with your friends – that and that most of the jobs available via your friends will be in those cities. The cities best represented by your friends will be easy to spot, then you can quickly click a link to see the jobs available in that city.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/San-Francisco.png" alt="facebook job hunt">

    Competition: Other Places to Find Work

    href="http://www.inthedoor.com/">In The Door has plenty of competition in href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/signal-learn-linkedin/">LinkedIn, the Facebook marketplace and a number of similar href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/8-sites-for-beating-the-job-hunting-blues/">jobseeking sites with much the same idea, such as href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/jibe-connects-facebook-linkedin-job-search/">Jibe. But with href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/job-search/">job searching being such an important process, there can never be enough options, really. Unlike Jibe, In The Door is able to be used instantly and permanently without any need to sign up your friends.

    class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/In-The-Door-Get-Started.png" alt="facebook job hunting" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-72865" />

    How did you find your last job? Through advertising or friends? Do you think In The Door would be useful to you next time you need to search for work? Let us know in the comments!

    Top 4 Freeware Spam Blockers That Actually Work

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/intro5.jpg" alt="" width="240" height="240" />In 1978 Gary Thuerk sent the first ever spam email advertising a new range of microcomputers to 400 users of the ARPANET service. In 2010  class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-ways-to-protect-hide-your-email-to-stop-receiving-spam/">we’re still looking for a solution to this increasingly frustrating problem, and most of us don’t want to pay.

    We get quite a lot of spam here at MakeUseOf, but then so does anyone with an class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/technology-explained-how-does-an-email-server-work/">email address these days. Even if your email’s not public, many users get targeted by so-called “dictionary” attacks against their email providers. One solution is to class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/five-free-temporary-email-services-to-avoid-spam/">use temporary email addresses, but if you’re already receiving a lot of spam then the problem’s going to remain.

    id="more-51959"> /> So if you’re can’t see your inbox for junk and need a break from hitting “delete” then maybe you should try one of these free services.

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.gmail.com/">Gmail

    Ok, so it’s not a spam blocker per se – but it’s class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/ultimate-gmail-collection-over-80-tools-and-tips/">one of the many features you can take advantage of and it gets the job done. Gmail uses a spam filter known as Postini, which is usually a commercial affair. By using Gmail you’re essentially getting a very expensive spam filter completely free of charge.

    The beauty of Google’s email service lies in the ability to connect your bog-standard POP3 accounts, allowing you to “collect” your mail from Google’s web interface. Gmail’s advanced spam filtration will help filter all incoming messages, and any detections will be labelled accordingly and kept out of sight.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/gmail.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="346" />

    Once you’ve registered (choose a good class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/spam-proof-email-generator/">spam-proof address), you can add an address under the Accounts tab in Gmail’s Settings. You won’t need to go quoting your new email, as you’ll still effectively be using your old accounts.

    Using the Send mail as tool in the same configuration panel will allow you to send email from the addresses you’ve added too, and all you need to check and send mail is a web browser.

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.spamfence.net/about-spamfence.html">Spamfence

    What’s better than one email address? Two, it would seem.

    With integrated class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/ten-best-antivirus-programs/">virus protection, this spam filter works by forwarding mail from your main (probably public and spam-riddled) inbox through the Spamfence filters and on to another private “clean” email address. Any messages that are detected as spam along the way will be marked accordingly, and you have full control over what is done with these messages.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/spamfence.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="210" />

    The service adds a subject header to each message, so if you want you can allow everything through and make your own rules up with your client. Think of the extra virus protection as a free gift, not that the service will cost you anything.

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.spamihilator.com/">Spamihilator

    If you’re a class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/free-email-clients-windows-7/">Windows user with a mail client such as class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-productivity-tips-for-the-quickfire-outlook-2007-user/">Outlook, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-must-have-thunderbird-addons-25-more/">Thunderbird or Eudora then chances are you’ll be looking at a solution you can download and run alongside your existing setup. Spamihilator is just that, and it even claims to have a 98% success rate.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/spamihilator.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="439" />

    The filter sits between the big bad internet and your client, removing messages it deems to be spam. You can also train this filter, so after a while it’ll know what to do based on your previous decisions. There’s a training area to help get the learning process started, and you can even add specific words to a blacklist (thus removing future emails featuring these words).

    That’s not all, there’s also link filtration and the ability to download plugins. Spamihilator provides a load of protection from spam, and it’s completely free.

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.mailwasher.net/">MailWasher Free

    The only program on this list with a commercial bigger brother, MailWasher Free is a simple program that can help clean up your POP3, IMAP or webmail email address. Download the program, connect to your email and preview as many incoming messages as you like before deciding whether you want to download them or not.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/mailwasher.jpg" alt="" width="580" height="340" />

    Using a similar Bayesian filter as Spamihilator, this program will also learn from your actions and train itself to adhere to your rules once you’ve made a few spam-busting decisions.

    Being the “Free” version, you’re limited to a maximum of 1 email account (and lose out on search, a customizable interface and updates). This isn’t so bad, the free version really is free (forever) and if you do decide you really like it, then you could always treat yourself.

    Conclusion

    Spam’s just as annoying as it ever was, but with a couple of clever moves on your part you can help minimize it. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, check out Ryan’s class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/setup-spamassassin-windows-2/">guide to setting up SpamAssassin on Windows. And don’t forget to mix it up, for example connecting your POP3 mailboxes to a Gmail account, through Spamfence and then onto another clean account will probably work wonders for your junk email problems. />

    Does Global Anti Virus USB Scanner Really Work? Global Anti Virus Review

    My name is Mark Anders and I am a graduate from Vancouver University of Computer Science. I design computer software of all types including Anti-Virus, Technical Support programs as well as graphics software. Many people come to me for advice on what software’s they should buy for their computers. Lately I have been getting allot of questions about Global Anti-Viruses new portable virus scanner. So I decided to do an unbiased report on the new scanner for everyone to see. Just for your reference the Global Anti Virus USB scanner is available at www.globalantivirus.org

    In my report I am going to cover these topics:

    -Global Anti-Viruses reputation

    -How effective is the new USB scanner

    -The price

    -Is the scanner worth buying

    Global Anti Virus has been around for years. They used to only offer simple anti virus software but have recently been experimenting with variations of the software. There has been no recorded complaints about their company and I have found nothing but good customer feedback. So I am going to come to the conclusion that they are a trusted company to buy from.

    The USB scanner comes preloaded with new Anti-Virus software. All you have to do is plug it into your computer and begin scanning. That makes things very easy for the average person who doesn’t know allot about computers. There has been many cases of consumers using the scanner and finding viruses that were undetected by their normal software. The more virus protection you have the better. Everyday, Hackers are finding new ways to infect peoples computers with viruses. It is estimated that 50 new viruses are created a day. That’s allot! Due to all of the virus findings by the new scanner, I am going to say yes. It is effective.

    The scanner is listed on their website for $49.95. Most Anti-Virus software alone will cost you over 100 dollars(for a good one). So $49.95 is a very good price for all the features that comes with the scanner.

    In my final conclusion, I am going to say that Global Anti-Viruses new portable virus scanner is worth buying. Files, photos and music that are stored on your computer are to valuable to be lost. I would highly recommend buying the new scanner.

    Keyboard shortcuts & Function keys don’t work Hardware Peripherals

    Try the following step, to get back Desktop shortcuts :1. Favorites is the place where websites links are saved. C: \ Windows \ Favorites. Once opened, you can drag and drop links desktop in this folder and displayed under home favorites. You can also organize cutomize-by the addition of any new folder and name it what you want. All links in any folder will appear as a side menu.

    2. Then go to Start-Run-msconfig and see what they have starting with Windows. This usually is the main site of the slowdown in home PC with things that need to get started.

    3. We assume that the surface is scanned and defragged. Sometimes, defrag in safe mode will help more than in Windows mode.

    Does all icons on the desktop shortcut do not work or only some of them? the problem with desktop shortcut icons is due to around every time it switches to a lower resolution. If none of the icons work ( double clicking doesn’t works) in windows xp, then check  Show Desktop Icons is ticked, then arrange icons by show desktop icons. If only a few icons work then, check the properties of the icons, you might need to restart your computer. If that still doesn’t solve the problem you can also go to Control panel> user accounts and create a new user account.

    I am using Windows XP with SP3 and all the latest updates and Internet Explorer 7. None of the desktop shortcuts to websites are working. Furthermore, the links in the IE favorites folder does not work either. Desktop shortcuts to programs on my PC, and other computers on my network, work OK.

    Portable Linux Apps Which Work With Any Linux Distro

    portable linux appsPortable Apps for Windows and Mac have been around for a long time, but are less common in the Linux world. Due to the complexity of Linux dependencies, and the different way different distributions locate these dependencies, the portable Linux application long seemed like a pipe dream.

    Until now.

    New website PortableLinuxApps features a number of portable Linux applications, which will work on any Linux distribution. These can run off your flash drive or from a folder in your home directory; it doesn’t matter. Best of all, there’s documentation out there to help you make your own program, should you not be able to find what you’re looking for.

    How It Works

    Like portable applications for other operating systems, portable Linux apps bundle each and every dependency a program has within a single executable. This has downsides: applications with redundent dependencies will take up more hard drive space, for example. For many the convinence of portable applications outweight this negative, particularly in our present age of cheap hard drives.

    Because every dependency of each program is bundled in the program itself, these portable Linux apps can run on practically any Linux distro (although I’m certain someone in the comments will manage to prove this wrong). Ubuntu, Fedora and SuSe are all confirmed to work with these apps, which is a solid start.

    Just remember: once you download such an app, remember that you’ll need to change the permission to allow executing the file as a program. If you’re not sure how to do this the simplest way is to right-click the file, then click “Properties” followed by the “Permissions” tab. You’ll find the option to allow execution at the bottom of the window:

    One Online Collection

    It would seem that, for now, PortableLinuxApps.org is the place to find…well…portable Linux apps.

    portable linux apps

    The collection currently is quite small but features many MakeUseOf favourites, including:

    • DosBox, a DOS emulator for playing old games.
    • Handbrake, the best way to convert video.
    • Transmission, the light BitTorrent program.
    • Pidgin, the universal IM program.

    Just download the software, set the permissions and you’re good to go!

    Rolling Your Own

    Can’t find a particular program you’re looking for? You can bundle it yourself! The process is relatively easy, if not a little convoluted. The good folks at OMG Ubuntu recently wrote a post explaining how to convert an Ubuntu .deb file into a portable app, so check that out for more information.

    Here’s hoping that in the future creating a portable app from a .deb file will be a two-click affair!

    Conclusion

    portable linux apps

    Package management is perhaps what makes Linux great, but it’s also one of the most common complaints newcomers to Linux have. Being used to simply Googling and downloading any program needed, the average new users are a little confused by what they find: .tar.gz files or worse.

    This is made worse by the sheer number of different Linux distros on the market, and the fact that they all have different ways of managing packages. The best thing to do, of course, is to learn to use your distro’s package manager. But portable apps are cool, and certainly have their place.

    Can you think of cool uses for such technology? Have any apps you’ve bundled yourself that you’d like to share? Let us know in the comments below!
