Test Your New Year Resolutions With These 5 Email In The Future Services

email in the futureThere’s always a tragic story behind our New Year resolutions and goal setting endeavors. Reams have been written on how to stick to resolutions. So, let me try to add a few pages here with a slightly different take on email in the future services. Emailing yourself in the future could serve as reminders to alert you about sticking to the path.

You can also use these future emails to create tiny time capsules. For e.g. if you have losing weight as a goal, you can post a photo of your current girth and then open it as a future date to see whether you shed the weight or the goal. Of course, there’s no guarantee that the service will stick around in a year’s time, but suddenly being reminded of your goals sometimes helps to jolt that laziness off your bones.

Lettermelater

email in the future

Lettermelater is a rich tool that allows you to create HTML emails, add attachments (photos), and even send it from within your default email account. The service allows you to set a future date, down to the last minute, when the letter will get delivered. You can also specify CC and BCC recipients; helpful if you are part of a group that’s mentoring each other towards a goal. But the feature I like is Lettermelater gives you the option to set up multiple recurring emails by selecting a range and interval, or selecting the dates individually.

FutureMe

email in the future to self

With FutureMe, you don’t have to log-in before sending out an email into the future. You can choose to go anonymous and put your emails into public view. The collection of public FutureMe emails is an interesting read. The mail interface lacks a rich text editor, but you can include pictures (webcam snaps or from the desktop) with your emails. Maybe, you can just ask yourself if you are still alive after December 2012. Keeping yourself alive inspite of the foreboding predictions of the Mayans could be a nice New Year resolution.

Eternity Message

email in the future to self

The About Me page says something about the original intention of the site – We had originally written the application to capture our thoughts, experiences, and life lessons so those could be shared with our children.

The service uses a secure protocol and the servers store the future messages – they are not sent out as emails. Recipients receive a notification to view the future message on the site itself. An early warning notification is also sent to the sender 3 days prior to the actual delivery. Eternity Message comes in two versions – a paid one which allows you to send messages 60 years into the future and a free Lite version that allows you to send the email up to 1 year in the future and to a single person. The message has to stay within 1000 characters – that should be enough for a New Year resolution.

Email Future

email in the future to self

Schedule a goals-to-achieve email in the future with this text only service and pat yourself in one year’s time when you can tick off a few from your 2012 New Year resolution’s list. You can also send it to four other addresses if you want to gloat about your achievements one year down the line. Of course, there’s a high chance that you could also have four eggs on your face. Email Future allows you to set a private or public (anonymous) permission.

Mail Freezr

email in the future

Put your future emails in ice-cold storage and bring them back to live on January 1st, next year. You can freely freeze your emails for any period between 1 – 100 years, so you are probably safe if you put down your resolutions for the year and check them out next year.

2012 will be soon over. The future will come soon enough. List out your goals using these services and when you get the mail from the past in your inbox, you can either gloat or regret that you let another year pass by without ticking off a few from your goals list. Are you using a geeky way to set your New Year resolutions? Or are they already lying in the waste basket?

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/apple-logo.jpg?323f2c" alt="" />Do you live in China, Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore or the Philippines? Do you find yourself jealous of Apple’s crazy Black Friday sales which you never get to enjoy? Well, Apple is thinking of you! On January 6, Apple will hold a “ href="http://store.apple.com/hk/browse/lunar_new_year">Red Friday” sale for the Lunar New Year. The sale will be held for one day only, and will feature “amazing iPad, iPod, and Mac gifts for everyone.

Red Friday is similar to Black Friday in that you don’t get to know what the actual sales prices will be in advance. So if you’re in one of these countries, and you’re looking for an Apple bargain to start the Year of the Dragon, head over to your country’s Apple store on Friday, January 6, and see what kinds of deals you can find. On top of the obvious iPads and iPods, this might also include a range of accessories, gadgets and software.

Apple has been launching more and more promotions in the Asian market, and it seems that they’re trying to get this market on par with their booming success in North America and Europe.

What do you think? Will a special sale like this prompt you to buy Apple’s products for the first time?

Twitter Releases Year In Review – Highlights Top Topics Of 2011 [News]

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/twittericon.png" alt="" />It’s the end of the year, which means it’s time for all the best of and most popular lists to come out. Twitter is no exception, and through some magic data tabulation they have come up with their most popular topics of 2011 list. The list goes in-depth and covers everything from the most popular hashtags all the way to the most popular places. If you want to know what everyone is tweeting about then you will want to href="http://yearinreview.twitter.com/en/hottopics.html">check it out.

It seems that people were enamored by Charlie Sheen this year, as Tigerblood was the second most popular hashtag, right behind Egypt. American football’s biggest game, The Super Bowl, was also a very popular topic. It’s actually a very interesting way to find out what is popular. Some of the results were actually quite unexpected. I would have never guessed that Thor would be the most talked about movie of the year.

class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/twitterhottopics.png" alt="" width="499" height="357" />

Some of the other highlights (or perhaps lowlights) include Rebecca Black as the most talked about musician and Charlie Sheen as the most popular actor. It’s at least good to see that important topics like Egypt and Japan made the list. People were obviously concerned for their fellow man, and that is great to see.

    5 Easy Ways To Be Charitable In The Year Ahead

    class="align-left" style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 5px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/skip1-300.jpg" alt="list of charities" width="240" height="188" />So Christmas has been and gone. Are you now facing the New Year and wondering how you can keep up the Christmas spirit and goodwill for the coming year? Well, it certainly helps when you know how to do so for free from your own home.

    There are so many simple ways to volunteer or donate to class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/charity/">charity by giving up a small amount of your time or re-purposing some money you would normally have spent. So here’s a list of five of the best quick and easy ways to volunteer or donate to charity. Bookmark the list of charities and use it to do the rounds weekly!

    id="more-61896">

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.skip1.org/">Skip1.org

    This is a great concept — it’s a site which makes you think about how much money you waste on frivolous things. You nominate something which you will give up, say a class="vt-p" href="http://vimeo.com/6303938">lunch or newspapers for a month. Then you donate that same amount of money to feeding a hungry child.

    Yes, you’re handing over money to charity, but it’s money you would have spent anyway. It’s also easy to share news of your donation with your friends via social networks, and hopefully convince a few of them to skip something for charity too.

    classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="580" height="430" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /> name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> name="src" value="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=6303938&server=vimeo.com&show_title=0&show_byline=0&show_portrait=1&color=00ADEF&fullscreen=1&autoplay=0&loop=0" /> type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="580" height="430" src="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=6303938&server=vimeo.com&show_title=0&show_byline=0&show_portrait=1&color=00ADEF&fullscreen=1&autoplay=0&loop=0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/skip1.jpg" alt="list of charities" />

    class="vt-p" href="http://freerice.com/">Free Rice

    Free Rice has been around a while, but it’s so good it’s worth making sure it’s on this list. Play a simple, addictive trivia quiz and Free Rice will donate rice for each of your correct answers. This is a free and simple way to give whenever you have a free moment. Read more on class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/freerice-charity-vocabulary-game/">FreeRice here.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/FreeRice.png" alt="best charities" />

    class="vt-p" href="http://causes.com/">Causes

    There are a number of things you can do using Causes, including raising awareness for your chosen charity and helping to raise funds for them. By far the easiest way to donate money with Causes is to set up a birthday or holiday fund. This way, instead of receiving presents from friends and family, you simply ask them to donate the money on your behalf. It takes about two minutes to set up, since you can log in with Facebook Connect – just choose the charity and you’re set!

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Causes.jpg" alt="best charities" />

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.donation4charity.org/">Charity Gifts

    Here’s another easy way to spend your money on charity instead of something you were already going to pay for. Instead of giving gifts to your friends, give them the knowledge that you have donated to charity on their behalf. The Donation4Charity website searches all the big charity gifting sites (such as UNICEF, WWF and Oxfam) and lets you search the gifts according to how much money you have available to spend. Buy a goat for charity for about the same price as a modest gift!

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Charity-Gifts.png" alt="best charities" />

    class="vt-p" href="http://sparked.com/">Sparked

    Spend 5-10 minutes donating your expertise to charity: Give website feedback, brainstorm fundraising ideas or help design an awareness campaign. This is what they need help with – if you can spend a few minutes working on it then you’ve made a difference to a real charity with just a moment of your time. Read more on class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/volunteer-professional-skills-charity-5-minutes-sparked/">Sparked here & get going!

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Sparked.png" alt="list of charities" />

    And many, many more!

    There are so many great ways to donate your time to charity — the sites listed above are just a few. Here’s some more great articles which introduce many more you might like to try.

    Get Organized in the New Year with Postbox 2 [Giveaway]

    style="border: 0px none;margin-left:20px;float:right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/giveawaypostbox2.jpg" /> href="http://www.postbox-inc.com/">Postbox is a sophisticated email client, with a myriad of robust productivity options to even satisfy the needs of users that declare themselves exclusive to webmail. This email client is compatible with both Windows and Mac; and is real easy to set up.

    This week, we’re giving away 25 copies of Postbox 2, worth almost $750 in total. How awesome is that? If you want to grab one for yourself, read on.

    id="more-62395">

    Effortless Setup

    If you’ve used or tried Thunderbird, Outlook or Apple Mail, then you know the basic options that Postbox packs. Postbox does include a number of features you wish they or webmail services would implement already.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/116.png" />

    Starting up with Postbox is really a breeze. To add an email account, you simply have to enter your name, the email address, your password and nothing else. You don’t have to search for the port number as Postbox takes care of that.

    In fact, that seems to be what Postbox does best, facilitate things for you. For example, when you first load an email conversation either in the main page or in separate tabs (yes, Postbox comes in a tabbed interface!), a pane to the right shows you handy links to search for attachments or pictures, find URLs, etc. so you can get a clear picture of the whole thread.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/47.png" />

    Social Networks Without Distracting Feeds

    Postbox can also show you pictures of the sender in a pane for more personal communication. It can pull profile pictures and email addresses from either your address book or your friends’ Facebook and Twitter pages once you log in through the mail client.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/fb.png" />

    Not only that, Postbox also lets you update your status on those networks, in addition to FriendFeed so you don’t need extra browser tabs open just to broadcast your latest thought.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/26.png" />

    Organization With To-Do’s and Topics

    Postbox also helps you get organized when it comes to tasks, without additional webpages open. You can mark any conversation as a to-do, which should show up in, for example, Gmail as a starred conversation.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/todo.png" />

    In addition to marking conversations as to-do’s, you can also assign topics to emails for easier searching later on. Topics are Postbox’s way to handle categories. You could think of them as labels in Gmail, but take into consideration that most mail clients present the Gmail labels as folders so Postbox Topics will not appear in Gmail as labels as they are not folders.

    They will, however, appear in the Focus Pane, which contains links to commonly-accessed topics and contacts, as well as one-click access to view emails that have attachments, are unread or that were sent at specific times.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/66.png" />

    Additional goodies packed into Postbox are numerous keyboard shortcuts and a very powerful search engine to filter messages from your large inbox.

    style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/73.png" />

    Postbox shines for offering lots of incredibly useful and time-saving features that would otherwise take some setup, tinkering and workarounds in other mail clients and services.

    Try it out for yourself by downloading a fully-functional, 30-day trial from href="http://www.postbox-inc.com/">their website.

    How do I win a copy?

    It’s simple, just follow the instructions.

Much has happened here during the past 12 months. We class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/answers-announcement">started MUO Answers back in February, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-free-mp3-downloads-bands-tour">Sound Sunday in April,  class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/introducing-makeuseof-tshirt-store">the T-shirt store in July, class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/introducing-free-iphone-app">the iPhone app in April and the class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/introducing-highlyanticipated-makeuseof-android-app">Android app in October.

    We jumped more than 200,000 in subscribers, we brought out class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/15-free-guides-teach-stuff">new PDF manuals, class="vt-p" href="http://www.facebook.com/makeuseof">our Facebook group is going extremely strong, and thanks to Jackson, we are able to offer you several free giveaways every week.  As we head into the New Year, things will only get better here at MakeUseOf.com.

    We also published over 3,000 articles during 2010. Here are the 10 most popular ones. Happy New Year everyone!

    style="border: 0px none; margin-left: 20px; float: right;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/maze.png" alt="" />The Invisible Web refers to the part of the WWW that’s not indexed by the search engines. Most of us think that that search engines see everything. Unfortunately, they can’t because they are just web spiders who index pages by following one hyperlink after the other.

    But there are some places where a spider cannot enter. Saikat shows you ten search engines that help you explore that “invisible web”.

    class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-10-free-ways-discover-music-online">Top 10 Free Ways To Discover New Music Online

There are two main ways you can do that online. You can use services which create music maps, or you can use music blogs and websites that showcase independent or up-and-coming artists.

    Nancy provides you with a list of 10 free sites to discover new music.

Unfortunately, you may be unable to follow such tutorials if you do not readily have access to a Mac to perform the preparation necessary for the installation.

    Great progress has been made in hacking PCs to run OS X, and it is now possible to install Mac OS X without a Mac. Here, Jorge shows you how.

    There are many free anti-virus programs on the market, and you want to sort the wheat from the chaff.  Documented here by Justin are the 10 best ones on the market.

In order to do that, you really need access to those underground search engines that may not be quite as well known, but they dig much more deeply into specialized areas of the Internet than the general search engines are capable of.

    Ryan shows you 6 of those search engines that can help you out.

Not every place you are in will have Wi-Fi. That’s when apps with offline capabilities come in handy.

    Productivity, however, encompasses more than just using the e-mail and calendar functions. Check these apps to help you stay productive on the road!

Ryan takes a close look at the Stalker Tracker, explains what it is, and also looks to see if there are any safer apps that allow you to monitor who is looking at your Facebook profile.

    Computer Virus Celebrates Its 26th Year

    Posted on 30 January 2010. Tags: , , , ,

    Computer virus, one of the most infamous aspects of both the web and personal computing, celebrated its 26th year this week.

    Happy birthday computer virus!!!

    It was 1983 when the first official virus was born giving a fundamental change in computer security. Fred Cohen, a graduate student from University of Southern California, demonstrated a computer virus during a security seminar at Lehign University in Pennsylvania. Cohen made a self-replicating program likened to a virus by his adviser, Len Adleman, coining the term virus.

    Cohen’s malware was not the first of its kind. Other computer scientists had also theorized self-replicating programs that could spread from computer to computer. Rich Skrenta aE” a 15-year old programmer from Pennsylvania who beat Cohen, wrote the Elk Cloner program. It is a self-replicating boot-sector virus infecting Apple II computers through a floppy disk.

    In 1986, two Pakistani brothers wrote the “Brain” virus only intended to infect IBM PCs running bootleg copies of a heart-monitoring program. The said virus has their names and phone numbers included in its copyright notice for people to contact them for vaccination if their PC gets infected.

    In 1988, the first widely-propagating worm, called Morris worm, was unleashed by Robert Tappan Morris, Jr. , a Cornell University graduate student and son of a National Security Agency chief scientist, spreading to thousands of machines worldwide. He was the first person to be convicted under Computer Fraud and Abuse Act of 1986.

    In 1999, David L. Smith wrote the Melissa virus infecting e-mail programs by clogging them with infected e-mails issuing from the worm. It is the first successful mass-mailing worm. In 2000, the Love Bug virus was made by a student from the Philippines. It spreads worldwide aE” Hongkong, Europe and to US, causing billions of damage and also affected The Pentagon, CIA and the British Parliament. Its writer was able to escape prosecution because the Philippines had no computer-crime law during that time.

    Viruses are growing and new threats come every year. Malware writers used to do annoying tricks to your computer to get your attention but their motives have changed now. Nowadays, they create malware to infect your PC, steal data and money from online bank accounts or make your system into one of those popular spam-sewing botnets.

    Computer virus has come a long way to celebrate its 26th year. Many viruses has been revealed, defeated and will be discovered in the future. Contact Techie Now for your PC protection. We provide PC support services aE” virus and spyware removal, performance optimization, installation and configuration, and general repair.
