class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/icon4.png" alt="creepy video series" />The Internet is full of some pretty
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-10-disgusting-websites-to-share-with-friends/">disturbing things, right? For some reason, we like to look at all sorts of stuff that will keep
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-5-spooky-websites-awake-night/"> us up at night, spooked beyond all belief. It’s kind of sick when you think about it, but that’s also the reason that eighties horror films did so well.
Fortunately (or maybe unfortunately), I’ve put together some of the creepiest video series that I’ve found on
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/youtube/">YouTube that will satisfy your self-inflicted desires of terror. Also, to the naysayers that don’t find these creepy at all, I’m going to hold you to your opinion when you’re alone in your room tonight – in the dark.
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/salad.png" alt="creepy video series" width="580" height="275" />
Of course I had to add
href="http://www.youtube.com/show?p=8egJhsKOpsY&tracker=show_av">Salad Fingers to this article because he’s kind of an Internet staple of creepy. However, when I first saw this guy, I didn’t think very much of him (or it?). By all appearances, he was simply an animated freaky green dude with a passion for the texture of rusty spoons. Nothing big, right? Wrong.
The nine episode
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/flash/">Flash animation series is merely an open look at Salad Fingers’ daily life. With that in mind, you really have to know one thing about Salad Fingers – this dude is messed up. He wanders around an apocalyptic wasteland searching for rusty objects, hangs out with his finger-puppet friends, and even takes pleasure in self-mutilation (he just loves when the “red water” comes out).
Sometimes we see just an average Salad Fingers adventure, but other times we dive into his imaginative fantasies that sometimes include life-size versions of his puppet pals. However, despite the fact that he once cooked a child in an oven in the second episode, he seems to have good intentions with whatever he does… I think.
href="http://www.youtube.com/shayesaintjohn">Shaye Saint John
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/shaye.png" alt="creepy videos on youtube" width="580" height="285" />
When I initially saw
href="http://www.youtube.com/shayesaintjohn">Shaye Saint John, my initial reaction was, “No. Just no.” These videos are quite possibly the strangest things that I’ve ever seen in my life, and it’s not so much the storyline of the videos (there really isn’t one), it’s how they are done. The
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/videos">editing uses a lot of repeated imagery, phrases, and camera shots to create a nearly subliminal video series that leaves you questioning, “What the heck did I just watch?”
The storyline for Shaye seems to be that she was an absolutely beautiful woman that faced a near-death, disastrous car accident. Said accident resulted in the total destruction of her face and the loss of each of her limbs, and now we have that incredibly odd character that we see today.
As you can tell by the videos, she now wears a mask that seems to be part of the head of a mannequin, and her “prosthetic limbs” are likely from that same mannequin. Some folks may say that the now-ended video series is a look at what beauty truly is, but I say just that we should all accept it as the freakiest thing on the Internet (by the way, watch Hand Thing. You won’t sleep tonight).
href="http://www.youtube.com/blackboxtv">BlackBox TV
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/bb.png" alt="creepy video series" width="580" height="275" />
Introduced to me by my former roommate Kishan,
href="http://www.youtube.com/blackboxtv">BlackBox TV is the YouTube solution for a modern form of Rod Serling’s “The Twilight Zone”. The videos in this series are not necessarily always creepy, but when I made the comparison to the Twilight Zone, I meant every word of it. Each video takes a look at instances where you might think “what if?” Even each introduction of the videos is reminiscent of Serling’s masterpiece.
The series dives into a darker realm, one that is outside of conventional thinking. The video series ranges from stories of a boy trapped within his mind – nearing death by drowning – all the way to a soldier who had to leave his his wife at home not for another country, but for Mars. The videos are definitely worth watching, and yes, some of them may just creep you out.
Conclusion
And so, my dear readers, you will now be able to leave here with three more creepy video series under your belt. Despite the fact that one of them may be a little more popular than the other two, it’s always good to remember the things on the Internet that scare us the most.
What other video series creep you out? Do you have any memories of the series shown right here? What are your favorite creepiest things on the Internet?
class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/volume-youtube.jpg" alt="youtube volume control"/>Last week we shared a few ways to quickly
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/mute-sound-webpages-embedded-audio-flash/">mute sound (or prevent flash from auto-playing) in different browsers.
This week we follow up with a few more interesting tips on getting more control over YouTube video volume (Google Chrome, FireFox and Internet Explorer)
Here are a few ways to easily make a YouTube video play louder or quieter:
Keyboard Shortcuts (Default)
YouTube videos support standard and obvious
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/comprehensive-guide-youtube-player-keyboard-shortcuts/">keyboard shortcuts: use UP / DOWN arrows to make the video play 5% loader or quieter.
Note: You may have to click on the video to move the focus to it and make the shortcut work (otherwise the shortcuts will just move the whole page up or down), so you will still need an extra click.
Control Volume Scrolling Mouse Wheel (Google Chrome)
href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/abjcfabbhafbcdfjoecdgepllmpfceif#">Magic Actions for Youtube is a fun Google Chrome extension that adds a few nice features to YouTube player including volume control using your mouse.
When on any YouTube video page, scroll your mouse wheel to make the video play louder or quieter. And you don’t even need to move focus to the video itself (like with the shortcut)!
The extension supports any web page with an embedded YouTube video as well as any page with a HTML5 video player.
The sound level is visualized via a pretty standalone indicator.
class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/volume-youtube-01.jpg" alt="volume control on youtube" width="498" height="380" />
More features to enjoy:
Set the videos to play in HD by default;
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-browser-extensions-dim-lights-move-focus-youtube-video/">Dim lights for the background page to enjoy the cinema mode (use the mouse wheel to change opacity of the background).
Auto play any video once you land on a page;
Disable video annotations.
The extension options let you enable or disable any of the above features as well as set the volume control look and feel:
Change the color of the volume controller line;
Set the text volume indicator (instead of color line):
class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/volume-youtube-05.jpg" alt="volume control on youtube" width="502" height="340" />
Other supported online video streaming services: Vimeo.com
3. Control Volume from the Status / Addons Bar (FireFox, IE)
href="http://www.foxytunes.com/">FoxyTunes is a handy FireFox and Internet Explorer addon that adds video controls to the browser status bar (or “
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/optimize-firefox-addons-bar-claim-space/">Addons bar” for FireFox 4+ users).
It is initially meant to help you control your desktop video or music player using your browser but it supports web video players (like YouTube) as well:
class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/volume-youtube-02.jpg" alt="volume control on youtube" width="316" height="129" />
Apart from letting you control the volume and even mute it from your browser, you can also see the video information, pause the video, etc:
Besides, you can quickly hide it using the > sign on the Addons Bar.
Other supported online video streaming services: Blip.tv, Deezer, Last.fm, Songbird,
href="http://www.foxytunes.com/firefox/supportedPlayers.html">more.

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/iphone_youtube_1.jpg" alt="" />Hardly a month goes by that Apple doesn’t release or update a new product or piece of software. Trying to keep up with all the best iOS apps and Apple-related accessories can be a little daunting for even the most devoted Apple fan. In addition to the hundreds of
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/tag/mac/">articles and several
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/">PDF guides published here on MakeUseOf, there are also several popular YouTube channels that focus on Apple related hardware, software, and accessories.
Each of these channels has 10,000 or more subscribers, and they each contain well put together productions, useful for both new and experienced Mac users. I’ve selected seven popular channels, but I’m sure I’ve overlooked a few. So if you are a more experienced YouTube viewer, feel free to chime with your recommendations.
class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/user/Apple#p/u">Official Apple YouTube Channel
It didn’t dawn on me until I started researching this topic that Apple has its own official YouTube channel. Not surprisingly it has almost 180,000 subscribers, with over six million channel views.
The channel content consists of Apple’s television commercials, keynote addresses, and online promotional videos. It doesn’t invite comments, nor does it subscribe to other YouTube channels. But it does provide the official showings of its major hardware and software products.
The vlogger who goes by the name of Mark (a.k.a Soldier Knows Best) appears to be the leading YouTube channel for reviews of Apple products. At the time of this writing, his channel has upwards of 242,205 subscribers, and similar to Apple’s channel, has nearly six million channel views.
Some of his latest videos are about his
class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZT9N52JINJM">favorite iPhone and iPad apps,
class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6oXZSQeGbk">OS X Lion Tips and Tricks, his views about the latest

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/image86.png?54167" alt="" />I have been professionally blogging about software for over two years now, and The Man With No Life is hands-down the best name for an app I’ve covered so far. It has absolutely nothing to do with what the application does, and couldn’t be farther than traditional SEO wisdom. In a nutshell, it’s a free YouTube downloader for Windows.
When you open the app, you’re greeted with a huge, intrusive banner and Facebook friends area:
Fortunately, that can quickly be fixed simply by resizing the window (thanks for not disabling the option to resize the window, Man With No Life). After resizing the window, the interface looks much saner:
That’s more like it. There isn’t even a scroll bar. Next, let’s switch over to the Search window. This is no more than an embedded browser with Google as its default search (yes, Google rather than YouTube, for some reason). You can also paste in the full URL for any video you wish to download:
As soon as you see the title (“Did you hear a click?” in this case) in the top-left text box, you can click Download. You are then taken to the Transfers tab, where you can watch the video download:
… or fail miserably, if the title happens to have a question mark or other strange characters. In that case, just drop the special characters and hope for the best. It worked for the video above, as you can see. Once the download is complete, you can switch over to the My Library tab so see your video. Sadly, the context menu is not very informative, and the file path is not listed.
Here you can see the default path for the files, as well as the quality setting. This is a bit of a simplification, as YouTube offers MP4-compressed files in multiple resolutions, so saying MP4 is “Highest quality” is not completely accurate.
Alternatives
Is the Man With No Life the best way to download YouTube videos? Definitely not. To be honest, the main thing it’s got going for it is the name. The interface is simple, which is good, but novice users may have trouble figuring out where their download went. There are several other services you can use if you want to download videos off YouTube. My personal favorite is
class="vt-p" href="http://jdownloader.org/">JDownloader, which is a Java-based solution so it’s quite heavy (but can do lots more other than download YouTube videos).
If JDownloader is a bit too heavy for you, you might be interested in an online alternative such as
class="vt-p" href="http://keep-tube.com/">Keep Tube. It couldn’t be simpler to use: All you need to do is edit the URL for the video in your browser put the word keep right before youtube. So to download a video with a URL like
class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRBcP6MmE8g">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRBcP6MmE8g you would just need to change it to
class="vt-p" href="http://www.keepyoutube.com/watch?v=cRBcP6MmE8g">http://www.keepyoutube.com/watch?v=cRBcP6MmE8g . Keep Tube also uses Java, but as a browser plug-in, and is very lean and fast. It doesn’t have a crazy name like The Man With No Life, but it’s very usable.
What’s your preferred way to download videos off YouTube? Let us know in the comments.

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/censor.jpg?54167"/>Space is silent, the digital one is not. Text and sound occupy much of it and users give vent to their feelings with both. Sharp-tongues and foul-mouths are the staple of comment boxes. This is one of those little tips that can make the online world a much civil, if not a better place.
For instance, the popularity of YouTube has meant that it is a much frequented digital hotspot. One of the ills is the poor quality of comments.
That’s when it time to turn to browsing tools that are there to counter the bad and ugly of the web. Let’s take a look at two extensions for Firefox and Chrome which help you to filter out undesirable and abuse laden comments on YouTube specifically and other sites on the web.
For Firefox:
href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/youtube-comment-snob/">YouTube Comment Snob
This Firefox extension is absolutely free, but the if you feel that it does its job of filtering out offensive YouTube comments, then you can drop the little donation the coder asks for it. Freeware or ‘
href="http://www.chrisfinke.com/addons/youtube-comment-snob/">donationware’, this handy add-on is worth an install if your child browses YouTube more often than you would like.
After installing the add-on, go to your add-ons list under Tools and check out the Options:
If you have no interest in YouTube comments at all and would like to keep a clean interface, check the topmost box which hides all YouTube comments. The remaining settings of this Firefox extension filters comments, hiding those that contain too many spelling errors, undue punctuation, or swear words. Though Firefox does a good job of hiding all comments, it doesn’t do so for the other selective filters.
Here’s a screen of a YouTube comment thread before the extension goes to war on it.
The Chrome extension though does a far more thorough job. Let’s check it out.
For Chrome:
href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/gfbnmebccmipejnnlcaenkhfhniaielg">Comment Snob
Nearly four years after he coded the Firefox add-on, the
href="http://www.chrisfinke.com/">developer released a similar extension for Chrome. Along with the slight rechristening of the name, the other change is that it filters out undesirable comments from comment threads all over the Web (with a bit of work). The filter for YouTube is very much still in place alongside the extended functionality. As the Option screen below shows, Comment Snob also lets you filter out custom keywords or phrases.
Comment Snob also introduces Rule Management. I won’t go into much detail with this except to say that this feature allows you to set filtration rules for any website. It gets a bit geeky (a tutorial is provided) and you need to know a bit of HTML and jQuery to frame the rules for any website. Rules can be customized for individual sites. You can try out few of the sample rules that are provided on the
href="http://www.chrisfinke.com/comment-snob/">homepage for sites like Mashable, Yahoo News, Hacker News, and Reddit etc.
How useful do you find the Firefox add-on and Chrome extension? Is a bit of censorship desirable when it comes to profanity laden comments? Let us know in a polite way.

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/youtube-captions.jpg?54167"/>It’s been about three years since YouTube
href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/11/automatic-captions-in-youtube.html">introduced improved automatic captions for some of the videos; in a year they became more common and last year they were
href="http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/youtube_turns_on_auto-captions_for_all_vidoes.php">enabled for all English-language videos.
YouTube captioning is the way to help hearing impaired people to understand the videos and, coupled with automatic translation, it can also help non-English people around the world to access the video content. The feature uses Google speech recognition technology to transcript any uploaded video.
The captions are mostly decent-quality (especially in cases when the speaker in a video talks slowly and clearly). Even in cases when the machine fails to fully understand what is being spoken, you will still be able to understand the content of the video.
By default, captions are disabled in an embedded video, however you may want to force the subtitles for one (or both) of the following reasons:
You want to make your video more accessible (especially to hearing-impaired people who are unaware of the option).
You are sharing an English video with non-English-speaking community.
Even if anyone can enable automatic subtitles manually, few people are actually aware of the option, so showing the captions by default would help a lot.
1. Add Subtitles in an Embedded Video (by Default)
Normally, if a user turned on captions once, YouTube will remember it and play subtitles by default until the user turns them off.
What you can do is to change the default settings (show subtitles to users who don’t have the subtitles disabled or are logged out of Google / Youtube).
To enable subtitles by default, you will need to use &cc_load_policy=1 parameter as shown below:
Despite the fact that this parameter is not “officially” described, YouTube has supported it for ages: “hl=” parameter in an embed code pre-selects the subtitle language. Most of these language code should work when used after the &hl= parameter:
href="http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms533052%28v=vs.85%29.aspx">Language Codes
This means that the following code should work to play the video automatically with translated subtitles:
However, due to reported
href="http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/youtube/thread?tid=1925b138a637c94e&hl=en">bugs, this code won’t work in many cases (maybe because of the numerous tweaks to the YouTube player). If you start experimenting with automatically translated captions, check out this
href="http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/youtube/thread?tid=1925b138a637c94e&fid=1925b138a637c94e0004a02148fdb92c&hl=en">particular post offering a few workarounds to the bug (one possible workaround is to use version=3 parameter in an embedded code).
Also, there is no way to translate captions in an iframe-based (newer) version of the embed player (sadly).
3. Linking to Videos with Captions
If you want to share a link to the video for viewers to see captions by default, you need to add this code at the end of the URL string:

It’s just hard to depart from the convenience of online movie and TV show streaming. Nowadays, there are

Here’s a list of 6 free Hollywood full length movies which have received generally favorable reviews and are fairly recent (oldest movie from this list was released in 1992, while the newest movie is from 2006). If you have some free time this summer, read on for some free, enjoyable goodies!

Starring Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith, Men in Black is a 1997 science fiction comedy movie, based on the comic book series of the same name. It was a critically and commercially successful, gaining a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, an Academy Award for Best Makeup with nominations in other categories, and grossing nearly 5 times what it cost to make the movie. It has spanned two sequels, the last of which will be released next year.

This 2006 film follows the story of a former American football player, portrayed by Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, who helps the teenagers at the juvenile detention center where he supervises to gain self-esteem by engaging in sports, particularly, football. This movie is actually loosely based on the true story of the Kilpatrick Mustangs, a football team consisted of juvenile detainees at Camp Kilpatrick in California.
This 1992 adaptation of the novel stars Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves and Anthony Hopkins. Oldman plays Count Dracula, who encounters a living image of his deceased wife in Winona Ryder’s character. The movie has gotten an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 3 Academy Awards for Best Makeup, Best Sound Effects Editing and Best Costume Design. It was also a box office hit.
In this 2000 film, Mel Gibson gives life to a war veteran who has renounced violence but still has to participate in the American Revolutionary War against the British, while his elder son, played by Heath Ledger, gladly joins the Continental Army. The movie received generally positive reviews and was nominated for 3 Academy Awards, including Best Sound, Best Cinematography and Best Original Music Score.

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence star in this hilarious 1995 action film about two Mami cops that need to protect a murder witness and investigate a case of stolen drugs. The flick, which was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, became a box office hit, earning $140 million worldwide against a $10 million budget.
This is technically not on Youtube Movies yet (as of 7/10/11), but considering it’s being shown on Crackle.com (which legally provides a lot of the full-length movies on this list on Youtube Movies), I’d say it’s bound to appear on Youtube soon.

Jerry Maguire is a romantic comedy-drama film from 1996 where Tom Cruise plays a successful sports agent who tries to rebuild his once-honorable career when he’s dismissed from his job, with the support of wide receiver Rod Tidwell, portrayed by Cuba Gooding Jr. in an Oscar-winning performance, who happens to be Maguire’s most disgruntled client, and Renee Zellweger’s character, who is the only person from Maguire’s former job that believes in him.

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/0_songsprite.jpg?54167" alt="" />In an article I wrote back in February entitled,
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-websites-check-music-releases/">The 4 Best Websites To Check Out New Music Releases First, I pointed out that
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/youtube/">YouTube is a great place to find new music. Simply put, there are lots of music videos on the site and no matter what you’re into I guarantee they’ve got it.
But do you know what the problem is with YouTube as a music-listening platform? It wasn’t really built for that, and because it wasn’t, it lacks a few key things that a typical music platform would have, like the ability to save music playlists. Okay, so YouTube does technically have a playlist feature for music, but you still have to wait for the video to load in order to listen to your song, and sometimes that can be a pain. I’ve found a simpler way to do things, and it’s called SongSprite.
class="vt-p" href="http://www.songsprite.com/">SongSprite (
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/songsprite-create-audio-playlists/">directory app) pulls the audio from YouTube videos and lets you make your favorite tracks into a playable playlist that you can share with others. You simply get the URLs of the YouTube videos you’d like to play or share, paste them into SongSprite and then you will be able to listen to them or send a link to your newly created playlist to whoever you like.
SongSprite allows you to connect, collaborate and share playlists in real time with your friends.
The process of creating a playlist is SongSprite is extremely simple.
How Do I Use SongSprite?
The first place you need to go is YouTube and start browsing for music you would like to add to your new playlist.
Once you find a song that you like, just go up and copy the URL for it. Shortened links won’t work, so make sure the URL you grab is of normal length. Paste the link into the box on SongSprite and click the Add button to the right. If you’re using
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/chrome/">Google Chrome as your browser, the
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-extremely-chrome-extensions-life-easier/">Split Screen extension would be great for this. Check it out.
You’ll know you entered the information correctly because it will place the name of the song into your list below. You can keep adding songs in this way until you are happy with the playlist you’ve created.
To share your playlist once it is done, just copy the URL below the player and paste it in an email or IM, or click the Share icon to send the link to Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, or StumbleUpon.
While having the ability to take content from YouTube and listen to it via a site like SongSprite is extremely convenient for all of us, I doubt that YouTube would really take kindly to this type of “extension”, seeing as none of YouTube’s ads or copyright permissions seem to come with the music you’re getting with the service. Having said that, I do think SongSprite is a great resource and a site that I could see myself using again and again. I invite you all to check it out and let me know what you think.

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/image34.png?54167" alt="" />Few things online can be as fun as YouTube. I can lose myself for hours watching videos. But the basic YouTube experience could use some improvement. Wouldn’t it be nice if videos could buffer as soon as a tab opened, and did so at exactly the quality I liked (or which worked with my connection)?
And wouldn’t it be refreshing if YouTube was a tad less cluttered with widgets, doodads, comments, related videos and other bits of text?
A Cleaner YouTube
class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/gpmpangiimbdkhbhmbbhkplffgkiomkh#">A Cleaner YouTube is an add-on available for Chrome, Firefox and Safari. In fact, we’ve covered the
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/handy-extensions-safari-50-mac/">Safari version before. It may not be for everyone; but if you’re a minimalist at heart, this is one add-on you’re going to like. Here’s what YouTube looks like with this add-on installed:
I intentionally captured my entire browser window, so you would see just how uncluttered it is. A Cleaner YouTube somehow manages to distill YouTube down to just the bare essentials, while still leaving everything you need in reach.
The top bar contains a search bar, Browse and Upload buttons, your user menu (if you’re logged on) and a Sign Out link. Under the video you can see this:
The comments open up instantly and seamlessly, and you can do all of the “social” things Google so very much wants you to do. But if you’re more of an “I just want to watch this video and move on with life” kind of person, you may appreciate how the comments stay out of the way.
As an added bonus, A Cleaner YouTube also cleans out Amazon. Here’s what Amazon looks like after the Cleaner treatment:
Okay, that stripped-down Amazon is just a bit too 1990′s for me, but for YouTube, A Cleaner YouTube is almost perfect. The only feature I would like them to add is a dark background. Being able to “turn off the lights” on YouTube with this add-on would make it a perfect ten in my book.
But now that we’ve got everything around the video taken care of, what can we do about the video itself?
SmartVideo For YouTube
class="vt-p" href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/lnkdbjbjpnpjeciipoaflmpcddinpjjp">SmartVideo For YouTube is a great deal more complex than A Cleaner YouTube, but it lets you exert uncompromising control over every aspect of your video experience. Check out the options panel:
Just a little bit scary, right? Who knew there could be so many options for just one video?
The configuration you see above is the one I use day to day. SmartVideo buffers the video for me as soon as the page loads. Once it’s ready to play, it pops up a Chrome desktop notification, so even if I’m in another tab or another application. I know the video is ready to play. When I watch videos on YouTube itself, SmartVideo makes sure I get the highest quality possible (see Video Quality on the left pane). When I watch embedded videos in other websites, SmartVideo stays out of the way and lets Google decide what quality I should be watching.
This way, embedded videos stay fast and don’t slow me down on other websites. When I want to really enjoy a video, I just click it to go to its YouTube page and enjoy it in maximum quality (and minimalist, see above).
By default, SmartVideo also shows a pop-up interface below every video, which looks like this:
To me, this is a fairly annoying feature. The pop-up often gets in the way and overlays other things I’m trying to click, and generally feels messy. Fortunately, it can easily be disabled within SmartVideo’s preferences (“Hide player settings popup“).
Bottom Line
These two lovely add-ons can make your life on YouTube much simpler. I’ve been using SmartVideo for over a month now, and have been loving it. I’ve only just found A Cleaner YouTube, but it looks like a keeper.

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/feature-youtube-3d.jpg" alt="youtube 3d content"/>Love it or hate it, 3D is here to stay. It’s a natural progression of visual displays, and I’m kind of bored of hearing it’s a fad. So let’s take this opportunity to look at something which is in fact, quite clearly a fad – yes, YouTube in 3D. Grab those red/blue specs, switch your TV to 3D mode, charge your active shutter glasses, or just go all crossed eyed while I introduce you to the world in 3D, via YouTube.
One the main arguments against 3D is that there simply isn’t enough content. In fact, half of the movies I’ve watched in the last 6 months have been in glorious 3D 1080p HD, so I’d hazard a guess that you’re just not looking the right places. There’s even a dedicated
href="http://www.3dtorrents.org/index.php?page=torrents">3D torrent site now (registrations are currently open, by the way). And then we have YouTube – the ultimate media liberator of the people, a place where idiots can be become famous and nothing is kept secret – and right now the best place to find amateur 3D content.
The Technical Stuff:
Head over to YouTube dedicated
href="http://www.youtube.com/select_3d_mode">3D viewing options page to choose first how you’d like to view 3D content. There’s actually quite a few options available.
class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/viewing-methods.jpg" alt="youtube 3d content" width="580" height="483"/>
Various colored filters for that old-school comic book 3D: This is pretty much the worst kind of 3D you can get and results in horrendous discoloration, but it’s good of them to allow all the combinations and not just traditional red/blue. You also buy an
href="http://www.googlestore.com/You+Tube/Accessories/YouTube+3D+Paper+Glasses+-+Pack+of+10.axd">official set of YouTube 3D glasses if you like.
Interleaved, for some 3DTVs and Zalman passive filter viewing methods.
Side-by-Side, for Samsung TVs and people who like to go cross-eyed.
Any 3D video you view will have a little 3D menu in the bottom right where you can quickly access the 3D viewing method page, as well as switch the left/right if it’s reversed, and change the video to full/half width (if you regularly view 3DSBS BlueRay movies, those are run at half-width)
/>
class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/3d-menu-button.png" alt="youtube 3d videos" width="212" height="204" />
How to Find 3D videos:
There’s three main ways to find 3D content on YouTube. Firstly, when the service was original launched, a special tag of “yt3D:enable=true” had to be applied to get the 3D button and functionality to appear. That’s not true anymore, but
href="http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=yt3d%3Aenable%3Dtrue&aq=f">there’s an archive of stuff in there and some people are still tagging their videos like that, so it’s worth a look.
class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/yt3d_true.jpg" alt="youtube 3d videos" width="580" height="457"/>
Secondly, YouTube has
href="http://www.youtube.com/user/3D">official 3D channel to highlight some of the better videos.
Thirdly, there’s a number of professional and affiliated channels producing fantastic 3D content, so here’s some of the best ones:
href="http://www.youtube.com/user/ExploreMediaGroup">ExploreMediaGroup: a good collection of quality content from various sources, mostly trailers and travel videos.
href="http://www.youtube.com/user/S3DGamerZone">S3D Gamer Zone: My personal favourite, I could watch these game videos and walkthroughs all day. The great thing about game content in 3D is that it’s generally done well and high-res, with none of the bad camera movement and poor video quality that accompanies user-shot content.
href="http://www.youtube.com/user/iwatch3d">iWatch3D: Just a regular guy based in London and into 3D, he films various events and locations.
Of course, just like the regular YouTube 2D the majority of 3D content is so bad I wouldn’t want to waste even a single minute of my life watching it – and those ads at the bottom of the video window are even *more* obnoxious when you’re trying to go cross-eyed. Okay, so maybe you’re not going to find anything to write home about – but it’s innovative, and I like that.

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/intro.png" alt="youtube playlist downloader"/>A bit after I figured out that there is a wealth of
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/14-youtube-playlists-watch-learn-programming-quickly/">programming tutorials on YouTube, I thought it might be a good idea to download them all so I can view them on the go on my mobile devices. Since the majority of these videos have been kindly organized into neat playlists, the question now seemed to be whether there is a way to download whole playlists. I certainly wasn’t the only one to ask this question. In fact, our readers have also
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/answers/download-youtube-playlist/">wondered the same thing on the Answers community.
Today, we’ll go over two ways you can download entire playlists, one which should make Firefox users ecstatic, and another Windows program which presents some handy options for mass video downloaders.
href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bytubed-bulk-youtube-video-dow/">BYTubeD – Bulk Youtube Video Downloader (Firefox Addon)
This Firefox 4-compatible add-on is a simple but fantastic little tool to help you find download links for multiple videos. Once you’re in a playlist page, you can right-click and select the BYTubeD option.
class="aligncenter" style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/2011-06-12_111537.png" border="0" alt=" youtube playlist downloader" width="427" height="543" /> The button can also be invoked from any YouTube pages with multiple videos, such as search results from a keyword.
/>
class="aligncenter" style="border: 0pt none;" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/2011-06-12_111715.png" alt="download youtube playlist" width="570" height="628" />
/> After you click on the BYTubeD link, a window will appear with the list of video links it has found. Now this is the part that confused me at first, because I didn’t quite read the

DVDVideoSoft has a variety of converter software, but the one we are interested in is the

/> One of the best parts about this downloader program is that you can preview the size of the individual videos and the playlist as a whole depending on the video format you choose. You can also select individual videos from a playlist that you want to download and which ones you want to skip.

Since it never hurts to learn something new, especially a skill set like computer programming in different languages, we will go over some of the best channels that will introduce you to the world of programming. Let’s look at which channels made the cut.
href="http://www.youtube.com/user/thenewboston">thenewboston is a truly great channel with an immense collection of programming tutorials. The
href="http://www.thenewboston.com/">official website contains a list of all the tutorials made so far, which are well into the thousands (about 1500 videos as of this writing). Not only does it have tutorials for various programming languages, but it also has videos on
href="http://www.youtube.com/user/thenewboston#grid/user/C315B2A086BA6AAF">building computers, tutorials for software like Dreamweaver and After Effects, as well as 3D-modeling software. The website now also has plans to present tutorials for a variety of other topics, like Math and Biology. Since all these tutorials are free, thenewboston is probably the greatest source of video tutorials for people interested in beginning programming languages. Bucky, the instructor behind most of the videos, explains concepts like a peer, so his tutorials are definitely very easy to follow and catch up to.

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/intro.jpg" alt="download youtube videos" />What’s better than watching
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/youtube/">YouTube videos in your browser? Watching them on your desktop, minus Flash of course! That’s exactly what Gmediafinder for
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/linux/">Linux and
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/service/windows/">Windows provides – an Adobe-free solution to perusing the YouTube catalogue. With support for video downloads and access to some great content from some other lesser known sources, Gmediafinder hides plenty of tricks up its sleeve.
If Flash is too cumbersome for you, and you enjoy being able to download your favourite YouTube videos, then Gmediafinder might just be the perfect solution.
Streaming & Downloading
The application itself really couldn’t be easier to use. Once launched, the first thing you’ll see is the Playlist view and everything you need to get streaming. Pick a source from the drop-down box (more on sources later), enter a search query and any results that match will be displayed in the left hand column.
Then it’s just a single click to load the video (or audio) of your choice in record time – the video doesn’t take long to load as there’s no Flash video player to load first. I found using Gmediafinder much faster than browsing YouTube via a web interface, with the added ability to download too!
Once you’ve found a video you like and fancy downloading, a small drop-down box should appear next to the Download box under your search results. You can use this to choose your preferred quality of video, which is limited to the versions YouTube has available for streaming.
style="text-align: center;">
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/downloading_video.png" alt="download music from youtube" width="576" height="466" />
A simple click of Download takes you to your downloads page, and the video will immediately begin downloading to the location specified in the Download path drop-down box. It’s then up to you to decide what to do with your new FLV or MP4 video.
By default YouTube will only search for videos at the 640×320 resolution. If you’re after HD content and if your Internet connection can handle it, you’ll want to change this option in Settings. Here you can also turn the other search engines on or off; by default they’re all enabled.
style="text-align: center;">
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/options.png" alt="download music from youtube" width="576" height="466" />
Services
Gmediafinder doesn’t just embrace Flash-free YouTube, but a couple of other sources of entertainment –
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/free-mp3-music-downloads/">MP3 search engines. You know the rules by now – if you don’t own it, it’s not legal. Audio playback is pretty good too, as is downloading files you’ve searched for. You even get a decent selection of visualizations to enjoy whilst you listen.
style="text-align: center;">
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/audio_playback.jpg" alt="download music from youtube" width="580" height="502" />
In addition to YouTube, Gmediastreamer supports the following search engines:
A European-run MP3 search engine that allows you to “Download music for FREE”, though with a limited catalogue.
class="vt-p" href="http://azmp3s.com/">MP3Realm
Now pointing to azmp3s.com, another slightly shady looking MP3 search engine that offers streaming, downloading and a lyrics lookup service. I’ve noticed not all files will stream, for some unknown reason.
class="vt-p" href="http://skreemr.com/">Skreemr
An MP3 search engine that claims to deliver music, remixes, podcasts and ringtones and works well.
class="vt-p" href="http://tagoo.ru/en/">Tagoo
A Russian MP3 search engine, quite possibly legal in Russia but probably not anywhere else. Some adverts on the site are probably NSFW (not safe for work) but accessing via Gmediafinder gets rid of those anyway!
Another questionable search engine that comes with its own
class="vt-p" href="http://status.imusicz.net/">status page that you can check if your results aren’t showing up.
Download & Install
To install Gmediafinder on Ubuntu Linux, simply paste the following into a new Terminal window:
There is a version available for Mandriva Linux at
class="vt-p" href="http://gnomefiles.org/content/show.php/Gmediafinder?content=138588">Gnome Files.
If you’re using another variant of Linux you can try to
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/compile-install-tar-gz-tar-bz2-files-ubuntu-linux/">compile from source, you can find out detailed instructions regarding this at the
class="vt-p" href="https://github.com/smolleyes/gmediafinder">Gmediafinder github homepage.
Windows users first must download and install
class="vt-p" href="http://penguincape.org/downloads/smo/gmediafinder/vcredist_x86.exe">this (32bit) or
class="vt-p" href="http://penguincape.org/downloads/smo/gmediafinder/vcredist_x64.exe">this (64bit) and then download and run the Gmediafinder installer from
class="vt-p" href="http://penguincape.org/downloads/smo/gmediafinder/gmediafinder_setup.exe">here (both 32bit and 64bit versions). The project doesn’t seem to have a dedicated homepage, though you can find out more at the
class="vt-p" href="http://gnomefiles.org/content/show.php/Gmediafinder?content=138588">Gnome Files website.
Conclusion
Gmediafinder is a fantastic little tool for those of you who appreciate a Flash-free YouTube experience and the ability to download your favourite video and audio files. The program is responsive, simple and not bogged down with unnecessary extras, making it the slickest streamer and downloader I’ve used in a while.
Download, stream and give Adobe the heave-ho with Gmediafinder; another fantastic piece of cross-platform freeware.

class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/find-creative-commons-content-google/">Creative Commons, the intellectual property license that lets creators retain the rights to their work but also make it available for others to reuse and sample, has come to YouTube.
The
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/youtube-video-editor/">YouTube Video Editor now includes a small button labeled “cc” which provides access to the YouTube Creative Commons library. Videos that carry this license will be visible in the editor and can be remixed or sampled by others as they create and upload their own content. These clips can be used free of charge, but the titles of any source video used will be shown in the new video’s information.
The selection of video available under Creative Commons is currently limited, but YouTube is “working with organizations like
class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/user/CSPANhouse2011"> C-SPAN,
class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/user/publicresourceorg"> Public Resource.org,
class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/voavideo"> Voice of America,
class="vt-p" href="http://www.youtube.com/user/AlJazeeraEnglish"> Al Jazeera and others” to provide more content under the license. Over 10,000 videos are to be available, although the
class="vt-p" href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-send-blog-posts-to-blogger-with-your-cellphone/"> blog post announcing this new feature doesn’t clarify when the additional content will appear in the library.
Publishing a video under the Creative Commons license is not limited to organizations like C-SPAN, however. Any user can now upload their video under the license, thus adding it to the database. The new option is available in the upload interface below the privacy options. Existing videos can have their license changed to Creative Commons.

class="align-right" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/play-part-of-video-youtube.jpg" alt="embed part of youtube video" />We have shared quite a few useful YouTube-related tips so far. Here are
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-youtube-url-tricks-you-should-know-about/">10 YouTube URL tricks to play with as well as some
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-common-youtube-annoyances-rid-userscripts/">YouTube annoyances and ways to get rid of them. You may also get inspired by this post listing
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/tools-to-do-10-cool-things-with-youtube-videos/">10 cool things to do with a YouTube video. This post shares another quick tip: embedding only part of a YouTube video.
While there’s really only one way to do that (the first one listed below), there are also a few well-used tools that can help you cut off a part of the video and embed it. This post is intended to shed some light on how these tools work and what they actually do.
1. Use the Embedded Player Parameter
The most straightforward way to embed a video while skipping the first XX seconds of it is to use the &start= parameter which works both for the “old-style” (“classic”) and iFrame player:
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/play-part-of-video-youtube-01.jpg" alt="embed part of youtube video" width="450" height="125" />
Likewise, there’s also the &end= parameter that makes the video stop playing at a specified time.
2. Chop With TubeChop
href="http://www.tubechop.com/">TubeChop (see our
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/tubechop-chop-share-parts-youtube-vids/">review here) offers a clean interface allowing you to easily cut any part of the video out. You just need to specify the time frame to chop either using the time controls or the pink slider. The tool also lets you add your own comments to embed with the video.
As a result, you get a new code to embed. The major drawback of using the tool is that your new embed code is based on the tubechop.com domain which might be less reliable than using the youtube-run code (I tend to think that TubeChop’s servers are much more likely to go down than YouTube’s servers which may mean that your embedded videos will be frequently inaccessible):
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/play-part-of-video-youtube-03.jpg" alt="embed youtube videos in website" width="530" height="134" />
There is also no iFrame-based alternative for the embedded code (which is believed to be more mobile-friendly).
3. Slice With Splicd
href="http://www.splicd.com/">Splicd (see our
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/splicd-isolate-share-interesting-parts-youtube-videos/">review here) is another alternative online tool that lets you specify the time frame to play any YouTube video within. It also requires absolutely no extra effort (like registration or anything similar). All you need is to provide the direct link to your video page on YouTube.
The resulting code is youtube-run and contains a link back to splicd.com (the latter can be obviously easily removed if you want):
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/play-part-of-video-youtube-05.jpg" alt="embed youtube videos in website" width="526" height="203" />
4. Snip With SnipSnip
href="http://snipsnip.it/">SnipSnip (see our
href="http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/snipsnipit-snip-youtube-videos/">review here) is a web-based tool that cuts a part of any video out and lets you easily share it using the shortened link:
class="aligncenter" src="http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/play-part-of-video-youtube-06.jpg" alt="embed part of youtube video" width="444" height="293" />
The resulting code is YouTube-based and also contains a link back to the service.
To Sum Up
To avoid any confusion, let’s sum up what you can do with any of the above methods and how they are different:
Which of the above methods would you prefer and why?
